Smokey Nagata hitting 197MPH on UK public roads, circa '99

A real classic, I fucking love Smokey. He's a legend in my book. Narrator is annoying as fuck tho.
So he managed to hold a gaspedal down? Impressive. By pulling shit like this on a public road with other traffic all you've managed to prove is that you're a dickhead
At least he had the decency? of doing the run on a monday at 2am, or something. Roads are practically empty at that time.

While I in no way condone what he did in the video and I agree with it being stupid, driving 197 mph on a public road is juuuust a bit more than "managing to hold a gaspedal down".
The roads were still wet, it was 2am, so it was very cold. Those tyres don't have traction at all. It takes a fucking load of skill to push that pedal down and still manage the car. Especially knowing it has a V12 in it with 800hp.
Sure it was risky but no one was on the road. And he hasn't caused any accidents and as far as I know he stopped. He's very skilled nonetheless and I hope no one else really tries it.
This is him, in NZ

That Kiwi policeman was a lot nicer than the British dude, hahah

You have no idea how hard it can be to control a car of that power on a wet road.
You have no idea how hard it can be to control a car of that power on a wet road.
Especially after using half of your rear tires to make a smoke screen.

Didn't even take that into account!
My mate almost went into a ditch from flooring an extra 10 or 15 km/h extra on a wet road with worn tyres in wet tarmac, and that thing has only 100hp on it.
Imagine a supra!

You're thinking of the"Final Evolution" 0-400(kph) version he made later, this one is the 0-300(kph) Supra that has an RB26 (which has 3.2L not 2.6L iirc) and a single huge turbo slapped to it.
[editline]18th March 2016[/editline]
He's a lunatic I'm telling you
All right, the "gaspedal" part of my comment was stupid and pointless.
I'm just tired of seeing irresponsible people being glorified, "look at this guy increasing the risk of killing someone innocent tenfold, so cool and crazy!!!"
It encourages people like him to continue doing what they do, and it inspires other people to do the same
I'm worried about other trafficants doing dumb shit when I'm driving as it is

He's a lunatic I'm telling you
Oops should've known by the engine sound, it sounds like an i6 rather than V12 but I wasn't listening carefully.
He's a lunatic and a crazy designer. He makes monstrous stuff that'll scare you real bad. But I love it.
And to the glorifying thing, not exactly glorifying what he does but who he is. He does bad stuff, but fuck I love him.
If this guy was on a motorcycle, FP would be reaming him out right now.

It's alright tho, he did it at like 2AM when no ones about and he never ever crashed before and it's from 99 so it's all fine.
But really i share exactly the same sentiments. Public roads are not to fuck about on, i'd call some random boy racer a cunt for doing it and i'll damn well call smokey a cunt for doing it too.
That police officer near the end is so punchable
that "bloody playground" line gets me every time
THis was done by video option, they covered a lot of this high speed culture back then with the famous "chiba-kun". This one is extremely impressive, the throttle control on the Autoselect RX7 (yellow one) is just crazy. The roads are wet, and going around a relatively twisty highway at 186+mph is no easy feat

For those saying about being reckless: There was once a club called the Mid Night Club in Japan who used the Bayshore Route at Tokyo to do their high speed runs. Most of them hitting 200 mph sustained regularly. Surprisingly, it ran for many years without any incidents. It was a very secretive club with strict codes. In 1999 or so, they had their first incident which involved a biker gang and a few civilians which lead to a few deaths. Before this, it was sworn that any incident that resulted in someone outside the club getting injured or dying, the club would be instantly disbanded, and it was.
These things are usually extremely organised and a random hooner will get overwhelmed and weeded out easily. High speed culture in Japan is fascinating, but since the closure of big clubs like the Mid Night Club and increasing traffic control laws, many ex-members don't even like to admit they were in such clubs, and great stories will probably be forgotten.

Would've been a lot better if it wasn't formed in the first place then, wouldn't it? But I suppose a few lives here and there are worth a bunch of testosterone filled idiots being allowed to play with their over engineered toys
nothing to do with testosterone
As terrible as these things are, I can't help but be so interested with the high speed culture. I want to learn, I want to see how it was. I want to know if such thing exists in Germany with its Autobahn.
I don't wanna do it, I don't condone it, but you can't stop someone from doing it, so I wanna learn about it.

Just keep googling, a lot of articles have dead ends, some nice information of the cream-of-the-crop of high speed culture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid_Night_Club which hosted its own wild rumours and stories such as an infamous black porsche 911 that was rumoured to have an F1 turbo unit from an mclaren F1 car or a Nissan 300z that the owner managed to supposedly obtain an experimental landspeed record engine straight from nissan.
Another famous high speed car: http://www.speedhunters.com/2015/10/finding-the-mid-night-racing-930/
An interview with Smokey from 2010: http://www.speedhunters.com/2010/04/interview_gt_gt_smoky_nagata/
Even wilder in my opinion than the Wangan runners are the Kanjozoku, running round the highway loops in osaka in finely tuned civics:

And them having a bit of fun with the local police:

There various movies based on the culture called the shuto expressway trial, they are all on youtube I think.
The OPs video was part of a series of other chapters, all found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-74-kFWJTm0&list=PLFc3Wf5G7mU5JsjSnoQi5XPrQTCEKjh1h
There's the video I posted previous which has a lot of content in it.
There was a high speed bowl run published for a Japanese magazine of the cars that featured in the Mid Night Club, there are scans everywhere, some of which (along with other cars) can be seen in this video

But just keep searching, there are a ton of videos of these high speed runs on youtube, along with other speed runs such as various highway loops (C1 loop is very famous) and the kanjo highway loop in osaka.

I bet you're fun to be around at parties...
I bet you're fun to be around at parties...
yeah bro, endangering innocent people's lives for fun is some sick shit
Shit Rampageturke 2, I kinda understand why the anime/movie/whatever was based upon now with the Porsche and Nissan 300Z stories. That's great. And thanks for the articles, I love it. I'm gonna go on an all nighter read about everything.

This is a cool thread, nice to see people into automotives here.
Visiting friends in Japan this summer, will be partaking / observing some of the high speed culture while i'm there, as well as going out to see dekotora and some kaido racer culture stuff.
Wish FP still had an automotive section.

Not wanting innocent people to die = boring now?

So just an obsession with "vroom vroom metal box go fast" and egocentricism, then?
Wow... you gotta have balls of steel to drive a 900HP RWD Supra on wet roads at that speed. Impressive.

I'm a huge gearhead, man :v:
I never really appreciated the Japanese drifting scene, but I do love their high-speed underground clubs, like the Mid Night Club. As a matter of fact, I've posted this video because I've been doing some reading on the subject, and holy shit. These guys are/were fucking legends.
Another one - here's another top speed run on the Autobahn circa '99, with driver Daijiro Inada driving an R34 GT-R.

Fuckin' sweet.

Top speed: 343.35 km/h (213.39 MPH).

Ok so, you clearly don't understand the hobby. You may want to stop making a complete ass of yourself by throwing around all those assumptions, if you don't have anything to contribute.
