What's everyone's thoughts on it? I know it's only a documentary but please no blatant spoilers, I haven't seen it yet. Also, what ever happened to that Minecraft documentary that was being made?
Maybe you could post a video ?
There you go OP.
You can buy it on Steam for $4. It's worth it, really.
I thought they really exaggerated to hell some things to make it way more serious than it should be. I realize that's where their income comes from, but things like "I'm in a fucking concentration camp" "If you can't get the work done, the past 2 years are basically worth nothing" Really? They're doing something wrong if they aren't enjoyably making a game. Yes it gets stressful, but if you aren't enjoying yourself at all when making a game that is supposed to be enjoyable and lighthearted anyway you're doing something wrong. Just my 2 cents.

Just my 2 cents.
The prospect and end goal of making a game are certainty fun, that and certain aspects of the games development are certainly fun. For the most part though you're stuck with stressful, tedious work where you just constantly program dull sections of the games architecture or repetitious data structures till your face is blue, and have to put up with issues of hardware variation, operation system hell, build inconsistencies and all of that is piled on top of constant bugs. It isn't like all you do is develop sections of the game that are visually seeable in gameplay, a lot of that stuff is hidden subsystems like the resource cache or various other areas of the game engine. None of that is extremely fun to do. All in all it isn't exaggeration it's extremely stressful especially when that weight is all one or two peoples shoulders and isn't distributed amongst a team of 100-150 or so people who already have decent product maintenance (i.e test teams) and decent management. [editline]18th July 2012[/editline]
I was expecting a video. I haven't seen the movie which is a shame because I followed it's progression closely up until release. Edit - It's on the usual torrent sites.
It's $4 you cheap fuck.

But the movie seems to focus on the not-fun side of making games.

More so if you depend on it for a living instead of as a hobby.

They were at a point where they either truck along or lose everything. Shit's stress inducing and depressing. Nothing to do about it, but to not go for the win. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline]
But the movie seems to focus on the not-fun side of making games.
Game development isn't all rainbows and internal tournaments son. We're not in Kansas anymore! It's a fucking war out there! People are dying for your games. Or just get seriously depressed and/or suicidal (like Fish did) due to stress and the fact that if it fails, you're done.

This includes videogames as well, I know I become frustrated after a match of UMVC3 because people looooovvve to drop matches constantly when they know they're losing.

This was during crunch time, right before they had to get their game finished on an early deadline because Microsoft

Binding doesn't instantly become bad just because you, in your little fiction world, can't deal with the fact that developers aren't living all sugar and rainbows. What the christ kid?

wow, how professional of him, seriously that beard just reminds me of the pube beard in jackass 2 "if this fails, I don't think I'll work in games again" I know a screamer when I see one, and this guy, he's a big one.
Yeah, that part was pretty painful to watch
And Edmund is chilling at home watching TV, not giving a fuck. :v:
"if this fails, I don't think I'll work in games again" I know a screamer when I see one, and this guy, he's a big one.
Again, it makes sense when you watch the movie
It really shows the passion and effort that people put into these sorts of things, and shows the toll it can take on you. Really interesting stuff and by the end the story feels personal to you as well. You'd probably be pretty upset about it all as well. Also, they were going to charge him $40,000 for a patch that affected less that 1% of players.

http://twitter.com/phil_fish With shit like this, he acts like a huge entitled baby, and doesn't understand why people get upset with him when he gloats about winning IGF multiple times with an UNRELEASED GAME. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline] Oh and don't forget. "Oh hey guys you know that gamebreaking bug that erased your savegame if you were near the end? we cant fix it because microsoft is charging us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game, even though we have over 100 thousand sales and at 800 points per sale (or 5 dollars), even if microsoft takes half from royalties, we have 250 thousand dollars in the black, not to mention all of the fucking money rewards we get from winning IGF with an unreleased game." The fact that he pays microsoft to be an xbox exclusive just compounds to his douchery. He could have probably doubled his sales if he released independently over steam.
That's incredibly unprofessional though. It definitely won't help him in the future. Can you imagine Garry tweeting "choke on my dick"
what a dumb peice of shit goddamn hipster nerds are painfully killing the industry
Edmund seems like a petty chill dude from what I've seen, although it doesen't stop him from saying some pretty stupid shit.
Yes that quote made me really dislike the fellow, I mean I get it's stressful but at that point it seemed he was void of passion for making games.
this post shows way too obviously that you don't have the slightest idea of how bad working life can get. especially if you're passionate.
what a dumb peice of shit goddamn hipster nerds are painfully killing the industry
yes indie developers are ruining the industry with their massive budgets
I love game development/culture docos. Rise of the Video Game, all that stuff
