Man, this I can agree. This year I feel like theres a game released for everybody.
Open world got BOTW, fighters are going to get Tekken 7, shooters got Pray, visual novels got NITW, and of course sports games fans are gonna get Madden NFL 18 with all new grass physics courtesy of Frostbite 3.
I love it when he brings up games that I haven't seen before. Donut County and the other two with a spin in movement looked really interesting.
This is why Dunkey is the best. He can excellently combine humor with genuine commentary. Also I love the fact that he focuses so much on indie games as well.
Wait. I never heard of Hollow Knight. How did I not hear about this?? I love metroidvania games, what the fuck.
Came out in February!

Every time I hear people bitching about the gaming industry being in decline, I instantly know they never play anything other than AAA games. There's always innovation and new things to do with indie games. People just have to take the time to look for them.

Dude!! Hollow Knight is a masterpiece of a game. just a heads up, it's coming to the Switch, so wait with your purchase if you're interested.

Yeah, I really enjoy that aspect. Also, doing game of the videos not limited to that year yeaaah boii
Omg, dunkey has guinea pigs??
Normally I disagree with his commentaries because they often relentlessly shit on a game. I enjoyed this one though. There are so many games to love these days, and it feels like youtube personalities spend more time criticizing details of a game rather then loving what's there.
We are in a golden age of great games, and I feel like we don't appreciate how good we have it right now.

He has quite a few videos where he endlessly praises games though. Not all of his vids shit on them.

Also the games he shits on aren't necessarily undeserving of it either

He said Yooka-Laylee was just as bad as Mighty Number 9.

To be fair at launch Yooka-Laylee had a shit load of problems

I mean, even in AAA territory you're getting banger after banger this year. Nier Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7, and plenty more to come.
In the words of one of my favorite podcasts, it's the best time to be playing video games.
Yea hollow knight is god damn incredible. It's also worth mentioning just how LONG it is. My first playthrough took me 25 hours. It's a god damn enormous game. I loved it but like I said on my overly long steam review it still suffers from a slow and rather dull early game before you get all your movement upgrades (so like the first 4 or so hours), and the entire map system is bullshit since you can't actually update your map for a new area unless you first find the hidden map maker in that area (I missed him entirely for one area because I entered it from the opposite location then what the game apparently expected. it wasn't fun at all and I was getting lost nonstop for that place) and even then you can only add to the map once you find a bench. Fuck that noise. There's also a ton of more content coming including a new campaign where you play as another character so it really is just absolutely worth the $15. Tho be warned the game has some parts that are hard as FUCK and made me want to DIE.
EDIT: o also the games version of quick teleport places to get you to various areas of the BIG world map are really lacking in placement so you'll be doing a LOT of walking trying to get from place to place. A lot of the world areas don't even have them, so a lot of game time gets wasted on just mindless walking. It's still a really great game despite it's few glaring issues.

And we cant forget my personal GOTY, Persona 5. The game just feels like the logical conclusion of jrpgs. It's absolutely stellar. Kinda sad it didnt get a mention from Dunk but I do really like what he does with putting a spotlight on older games so I'll let it slide.
So far, 2017 has had amazing releases. Really makes for all of last year's No Man's Letdown and such
Night in the Woods is my favorite game of the year thus far. It's absolutely stunning and pitch perfect in nearly everything it does.
Rarely have I seen a game aim so high and do better.

I heard the writing was pretty bad.
I heard the writing was pretty bad.
The writing is like, all there is to the game I think? It's super narrative and dialogue focused.
I heard the writing was pretty bad.
it's the opposite. the characters are fucking stellar. they're so stellarly written that they completely overshadow the overarching plot, which is the issue. you care more about the characters than the story.
though I'm not really sure how bad of a problem that is
Just got Hollow Knight. Going to play the shit out of it this weekend. I absolutely loved Ori and The Blind Forest. I think that game was a masterpiece as well, and if this game has as high as a pedigree, i'll probably love it all the same.
I don't play many games over, but I went through Ori twice cause it was so awesome.
I thought it was weird that he played up last year as '"the sad year." There were shitty scandals and disapppointments, but there were also more games I developed a leigitimate love for released by this time last year than there has been so far this year. Maybe it's just because I love shooters and shooters have been a little dry in comparison so far.
DaS3, DOOM, Overwatch, FURI, Titanfall 2, and XCOM 2 were all part of 2016. You want a year that was pretty barren as far as high profile releases, try 2013.
I heard the writing was pretty bad.
I'd say it's not for everyone, but if you do end up liking it, you'll probably end up liking it a lot.

2013 was pretty good as well though
Every year since the sequel-apocalypse (Cod:MW era) has been pretty good if you keep on eye out for great games and not dwell with disappointments.
However, 2017 has been exceptional so far, many of my personal best-of-genre are from 2017.
2013 was pretty good as well though
Trying to figure out how to make this brief - there were some good high profile games released in 2013, but there was also:
-More terrible disappointments than even 2016
-A lot of alright-but-not-amazing forgettable sequels
-At least two major releases that straight-up reused the map of the last game
-A lot of pretty good games that had some kind of glaring flaw
A lot of it has to do with personal perception, though. I didn't care that much about a lot of the franchises that got better games that year like Tomb Raider and AC. The Wonderful 101 is probably my top pick from that year, personally. Metal Gear Rising is somewhere nearby.
2014 was a pretty weak year, actually. The only seriously good game I can think of, that came out in 2014, was Wolfenstein: TNO and maybe Shadow of Mordor as well.

You've got Alien: Isolation, Titanfall, Stick of Truth, Bayonetta 2, the new Smash, Divinity, Ground Zeroes, Wasteland 2, and some really good indies scattered about, like Shovel Knight.
It had some awful games just the same but my god 2013 was just the year of "we can make whatever careless, generic sequel we want and by god they'll fuckin' buy it." There was something cynical that permeated the whole thing.
