Creating fascinating AI is the only thing that keeps me going with my shitty pet project. Progress is slow.
Speaking of good AI, Rage had some as well. I remember playing it and was surprised to see that enemies would use the environment to dodge projectiles or to flank and coming up to you from behind. I died a few times because I didn't pay attention.
A good AI isn't a smart AI, a good AI makes the player feel smart; the more you THINK the AI the smart, the smarter you feel when you "outsmart them".
Game AI's job is to ensure the player have a good time, not to prove how brilliant they are.
AI that is predictable and can be easily learned and even manipulated is bad on a pretty objective level. Yet its the most common AI out there.
That isn't to say randomness is good, but if it's hard to predict, and flows naturally, its good AI. it has to predict the players next move, not be predicted by the player.
Reminds me of how I wish in Bannerlord the individual rulers will have characters, instead of just being essentially the same guy
I liked how the AI was in Uncharted, the AI would start throwing grenades if you were camping somewhere behind cover and would flank you if you would sit still for long enough which caught me by surprise plenty of times
