Is there a really thin string that he's using because it looks like he just hops off without anything then hops back on.
That's what I was thinking but it looks like he can keep his momentum going by leaning forward or something. God only knows where he pulled that beer from..
The weight of the boat causes it to push water out of the way, so the water behind the boat is misplaced and lower. If you lean forward, you'll move forward as if you're going down a slight slant, and if you lean back it increases the water resistance so you slide backward. I'd also imagine its due to the boat actually pushing the water forward, causing an increase in velocity for the water and whatever is on it (the board). Also you can use your own energy to control when you press down with your weight. If you lift up as a wake comes back toward you, then push back down, you'll slide forward as you slide over and then down the wake.
I have a few friends who can surf behind a boat for some time without holding onto anything. It is called wakesurfing.
