I much prefer him having his own views and taste rather than just following what someone else tells him he should think. Does the level of enjoyment a game gives you decrease just because someone else dislikes it?

You should never watch people who cover large genres of games because they probably write their review based on bias or from a general rubric.
I always prefer reviews from people like the guys at Easy Allies because they're transparent in who writes the review and it usually coincides with their strongest genre if applicable (like anime games or RTS).

So, what was the deal with Vanish that made people dislike it so much? Because to be honest, when I first heard of this game, it was in a "top 10 promising games that turned out to be failures" youtube video. Did people not get how to play it right or what?

"Reviewers" are notorious for not only skimming through the first bit of gameplay any game has to offer, they also low-rate games that present any form of challenge. They're notoriously terrible at playing games in general. Polygon's "first 30 minutes of Doom" video is a perfect example of this.
Platinum's games have always been lowly rated by "reviewers" because it takes more than five minutes to understand the mechanics and require more fine motor skills than a broken extendo-claw, which these people clearly don't have. Look at God Hand's reviews, they're really low despite the game being a fucking [i]gem[/i].

It's a fucking miracle that any of the older Devil May Cry titles got remotely positive reviews as the games, while not the hardest of their genre, are a fucking chore until you get s-s-stylish.
Vanquish takes a little bit to really kick it into top gear too. So the first impressions can be a bit eh. But once you understand how to work with the shooting and movement mechanics properly it's a blast.

it was a fairly short game for full retail price.
the game is meant to be replayed since it's essentially a score attack kind of game, but a lot of people didn't buy vanquish for that.

Yeah, solid gameplay but it get's criticised because it's short. On my first (and only) time playing it I got stuck a few times, which I estimate added about half an hour to my completion time, and I still finished it in less than 5 hours.
