I feel this is probably a good starting point for FPers who don't know who Terry is or what TempleOS is.
Tbh Terry is such a horrifying case
a legitimate genius turned into a waster because of his mental illness
idk, I really can't laugh at terry, it's way too sad

For what it's worth he seems comfortable enough with his position. He gets angry a lot but he doesn't seem depressed.

Schizophrenia changes your very thought process and perception of reality. It is extremely likely he's not really fully aware what has happen to him (which is why it's so sad) or even cares for that matter. I mean running on 48 hour schedules downing unhealthy amounts of caffeine while legitimately believing that the Government is after you and controls every aspect of you life pretty much preoccupies most of your time I'd imagine.

My aunt has it. Out of 4 siblings, she's the one who's life story seems the saddest. And the worst part is that it totally wasn't even her fault. She was the most academically gifted of all my aunts and uncles, moreso than my mother (who is in the medical field, now). Sometime near the end of high school her behavior became more and more erratic - she started going out late, drinking loads, and doing some pretty hard drugs. Given that my grandfather was a 30yr veteran of the Air Force this... didn't exactly go over well. My grandparents and my aunts/uncle/mother all tried to fix her and help her to no avail. Eventually, they found out she has schizophrenia. And her case is really rather severe. She's never really recovered and certainly doesn't seem like a normal individual - lots of her stories are beyond untrue and conversations with her are always "interesting".
That being said, she found a husband and is quite in love with him, and they're very happy together. She's a very empathetic and feeling person, and always tried to get me gifts when I was younger and my family couldn't afford much. I'd be lying if I said the gifts weren't odd (Like 10lbs of gummy candy, one year :v:), but they always came from the heart and that counted for a lot. My grandfather also made sure to setup an investment account for her that would last the rest of her life, using much of his pension from the Air Force (which was considerable, given his status as a combat pilot + his length of service) to build this fund, pay her bills, and get her treatment. Spoilered because sad: [sp]When my grandfather was in his 70's, she had an extremely averse reaction to her medication and physically assaulted him rather severely. Being the incredible person he was, he still managed to help her and find her a new medication after that.[/sp]
TempleOS makes me sad because to make an OS is a huge undertaking. The potential this man has a systems and OS programmer is unreal, if he could get his mental disorder under control. Its really unfortunate to see who he happens to be right now, though. I find it hard to watch the newfound interest around Terry, given the family members I have and my own experiences with mental illness. Mental illness is a serious matter, and while its daft to try to ban all joking about it there comes a point where it just becomes harassment and asinine mockery.
There was a nice article recently that went more thoroughly into TempleOS and gave it a serious look, which was really quite interesting but I cannot for the life of me find anything but more joke/meme articles.

Like, highly disorganized thought processes and speech are one of the big symptoms of schizophrenia and this dude still managed to make an OS. I can't program my way out of a wet paper bag if I'm tired, and this dude made a whole OS with a severe mental illness. I so badly want there to be a good ending to this story, where Terry gets treatment and ends up as (yet another, maybe?) highly gifted but eccentric contributor to the Linux kernel or something (or just a paid programmer, somewhere).
Very interesting and sad story. Making an entire OS is really impressive regardless.
I really liked the video until he took this guys sad story to try to make a point about Tumblr people. Who even cares.

I think that was more than just shitting on tumblr people, he was making a point of just how serious and devastating mental illness actually is, referring back to another video he did about people who feigned mental illness for attention.

Try watching the video next time, maybe you won't miss the entire point before you post.

I did... watch it? Or else I'd not have been able to get to the end in which he discusses "SJWs" and that typical stuff we see too much of.
I watched the tumblrisms video after reading your post and I find his analysis utterly lacking and full of the typical exaggerations about tumblr that people make about diverse communities with really shitty minorities (ie people who pretend to be mentally ill).
I was just making a comment on the end of a video that I otherwise liked.

That's kind of my point. Mental illness sucks but he's doing his thing and he has his post-ironic /g/ fanclub and he seems to be enjoying life nonetheless.
I think it's beautiful, not sad. Pretty significant contribution to art and culture if you ask me.
The stuff about kids is disturbing and sad. I get the feeling he's fighting down some pretty sick urges on top of everything else... I envy his genius but I'd never want to be him.
Anyone concerned he has (and will) hurt someone?
Looks like his twitter account got suspended
Since he is getting more known lately, I do wonder if someone will walk up to him and have a conversation, maybe even make a friend?
I am distressed that Terry has to be dealing with this bullshit. I am distressed that anyone has to be dealing with something as fucked up as schizophrenia.
