oh boy another conspiracy show that will somehow get 743 seasons.
A SyFy Original Movie
if the history channel were actually reporting developments in the field of history in its full scope and not just dumb war ephemera it would be hated even more, rest assured

Just because you're interested in bad things in history doesn't make you a bad person.
what? [editline]24th December 2014[/editline] i didnt say any of that? [editline]24th December 2014[/editline] I meant even if, instead of digging up shell fragments from the Somme, the history channel made actual historical research into engaging videos it would offend people, or be interesting to anyone in the same way that science holds universal appeal

Doubt anyone would actually say it's bad to report on war, or learn about it,

If they were digging up bones in Africa and saying "This is why the Negro is inferior to the white man, god made us this way for a reason", then yea I could see why people would get uppity about that. You're right that the majority of people would be disinterested in such a show but thats why the History Channel used to run shows like Modern Marvels, Dogfights, Mail Call, Shootout!, and Wild West Tech. History can be entertaining and still informative. Theres a reason why channels like the Science channel barely break out of the single digits in viewership.
Dude what the fuck are you talking about all im saying is that if you took the average history textbook and made it into a tv show it would alienate people because real history has no alleigances and takes a critical look at things we take for granted and/or cherish [editline]25th December 2014[/editline] Like even setting aside modern stuff if you took a history channel thing on the crusades and made it historical it would be boring because of the actual anticlimaxes, it would explain the military activity primarily through the cultural background that motivated it, it would analyze arab sources that the average couch dweller can't properly interpret. All i'm saying is that people arent ready for it because that's not where we are as a society. I'm just pointing out the irony. History isnt that digestible in reality.

War makes it easy to portray history (especially WW2) because you can pretty much use a black and white view of history and still not offend many people. But when you start delving into more complicated issues and start presenting multiple sides of the same historical event you run the risk of offending and alienating large groups of people. Objective historical research (it is debatable if it exists) would not be for everyone, since it requires quite an open mind.
I remember when the history channel was actually about history and animal planet about animals fucking each other
Aliens will watch this and be like "Earths a fucked up place lets not go there" and we die in our ignorance rip
Aliens will watch this and be like "Earths a fucked up place lets not go there" and we die in our ignorance rip
Then they'd watch Ancient Aliens and go "Yeah this happened"

Even if you go into an unnecessarily convoluted section of a very uninteresting time in history, there will always be a niche group that will enjoy such a show. I don't understand how having a show thats very straight forward, unpoliticized, and factual is going to be controversial. Like I said earlier, unless they put out a bullshit series that speculates on how Hitler did nothing wrong, then it's not going to cause riots or the talking heads on fox news to be up in arms about it. And even if that were the case who gives a fuck? You're forgetting the fact that history isn't meant to be entertaining, it's meant to be educational. A mindset like yours is why the Discovery Channel, TLC, and the History channel are all trash now.
Does anyone else remember a show on history by the name of Cities of the Underworld? That was an entertaining show while still being entertaining, going through the old things underground.

They're thinking about how many people will watch the show = how much money you're going to get from advertisers = your channel stays afloat. They'll always prefer Trucker Pawn Wars over an academic, in-depth, critical review of the Bosnian Wars because one has an entire fanbase and hate-base watching ironically, and the other only entertains a very niche group of historians. That's also why government-funded programs like PBS don't have that concern, and as a result create documentaries about stoplights.
This video is not available in Canada even though Canada has a Canadian version of the History Channel. There's a Canadian version of American Pickers, except with two really, really gay cowboys from Alberta.

A documentary that enumerates all the times the national guard was deployed to violently repress strikes, break up marches in DC during the Gilded Age? How Jefferson probably eloped with one of his slaves? How the US rescued Gestapo officers from trial to use them against communist movements South America on government payroll? All this is kosher in the eyes of history but it's not marketable in the eyes of shitty dumb people who just want to make money. All i'm sayin'

Couldn't agree more really, younger people are more interested in that stuff but none of them own cable. Fuck, I don't own cable. Most cable subscribers wont be interested in actual history. [editline]25th December 2014[/editline] Cable is on the decline anyway, history channel is fucked either way.
