When I went to the Timpanogos caves, there was a guide who instructed us very throughly not to touch ANYTHING. Since the chemicals in your hands can irreparably damage the cave.
There was lots of areas that you could touch the walls, and stalagmites, but afaik nobody really did knowing that it'd fuck up millions of years of progress.
I'm sure this guy was instructed too, he's just a dumbass.

Still, it's a rock. A bigger deal may have been made if it was one of the larger, eye-grabbing ones but I doubt anyone would've cared if that particular stalagmite was knocked down by other means.

I think the possible argument here is that allowing stuff like this go over the shoulder without care will make idiots think it's OK to do it and then everyone's doing it and then everything's fucked because no one went "hey maybe you shouldn't fuck up cool shit for no reason other than seeing it break which is pretty fucked up" you know what i'm saying my neighbor it's like if FP didn't have moderation and people could shitpost in every thread like they do in OIFY

It's not about how "valuable" that one piece of stalagmite is. Vandalism is simply unacceptable, especially considering how long it took for each of the individual stalagmite formed. Maybe stalagmite caves are common from where you live, but this certainly isn't the case within China. If everyone who goes into the cave and kicks down a piece of stalagmite, this cave would cease to exist in no time and there would be nothing left to see.
