Top tier parenting at its best.
To be honest I think this problem only largely affects the older generations. The sexism that is. I don't think that you would expect engineers in general to look very attractive. 'You're too hot to be an engineer' is something I could also imagine being said to a male engineer.
I work in the petroleum industry and we get every kind of person as an engineer. The head engineer at work is like Santa - fat and cheerful, our senior chemical engineering analyst apparently does modeling on the side - though I'm not rude enough to ask, our senior geologist is a late 20s/early 30s stereotypical surfer, I could go on.
I seriously have to question how common these sorts of people in the article. I can't say I've met them unless you're counting old farts that will be six feet under any day soon.

Having never worked anywhere else I have no clue if this is normal. We're an odd bunch.
I will never understand these diversity problems, gender quotas and stuff. The college where I studied computer science was 80% men, on the other hand the economy college across the street was 80% women. You can't push gender quotas in a IT company with statistics like that.
Also once we had a professor from Germany who tried to recruit female students to come take their major in Germany. We were a group of 15-20 guys and around 7 girls. It was the f*cking weirdest thing I saw at college.

Forcing gender quotas on courses is just retarded. People should just be able to do what they like.

But diversity

The thing is that, with all else equal, fields like engineering should be attracting an equal amount of boys and girls. The problem is biases and perceptions, a degree of sexism, mean that such fields of study are disproportionately biased towards men.
The thing is that, with all else equal, fields like engineering should be attracting an equal amount of boys and girls.
Or maybe, instead of blaming the job, why don't you blame the parents who raised their daughters to play with dolls and their sons to play with Lego?
Top tier parenting at its best.
My mother was motivated with comments like "Well at least you are smart, if not beautiful" by her parents. Not sure which is worse. :v:
Why?
Because with everything else being equal, boys and girls will be attracted equally to every area of study; just like how right now the amount of people with blonde hair who study engineering should be in the same proportion to the amount of people with brown hair who study engineering. As in, gender shouldn't be disproportionate, just like another genetic trait, hair colour, isn't.
Or maybe, instead of blaming the job, why don't you blame the parents who raised their daughters to play with dolls and their sons to play with Lego?
What is wrong in playing with dolls ?
Or maybe, instead of blaming the job, why don't you blame the parents who raised their daughters to play with dolls and their sons to play with Lego?
I never said I blamed the job. All of this gender inequality stuff starts in the home, and it's up to schooling to iron the issues out. Even then, the will of older generations will continue to live on for a while until those people retire and die off, and it probably won't be for another fifty years or so when careers such as engineering and senior management will be equal.

In order to acquire that you'd have to force people instead of letting them pick what they feel like that also has a thriving job market.
And thus limiting people's freedoms, because there'll always be differences between sexes even if there's no environmental bias.

Boys and girls aren't equal, why should they be interested in the same things? It's something that is observable in all species where sexual dimorphism exists. Different sexes pratice different activities. It's not mandatory, it's not a rule of thumb, but it will also never be proportional, it's just how human beings were wired.
Or maybe, instead of blaming the job, why don't you blame the parents who raised their daughters to play with dolls and their sons to play with Lego?
That would imply that it's the parents choice instead of the kids choice, which is wrong.
Or maybe, instead of blaming the job, why don't you blame the parents who raised their daughters to play with dolls and their sons to play with Lego?
Maybe instead of blaming the parents blame the whole society for only marketing dolls to girls and Lego's to boys?
This is a rampant problem bigger than any one person. Girls are still being raised as trophies, just pretty things to look at to make some man very happy and to be passive. Boys are being raised to be the muscle in our society, to be decision makers and leaders. But if a girl behaves like a boy she is labelled a tomboy, and if a boy isn't good at doing something then he's "doing it like a girl".
I don't normally say feminist stuff but I think if these gender roles were destroyed it would have great implications in every aspect of our lives, from the economy, to education and relationships. I just don't see why we have to force interests on our children, just let them run outside, play and discover their own passions. Don't put them in team blue or team pink from day 1.

Men prefer working with things while women prefer working with people. Research supports this statement.
prove this
Do you really need sexual dimorphism proved to you?
What is wrong in playing with dolls ?
Nothing wrong with it, but the early years probably mean the most when shaping the interests of a child.
That would imply that it's the parents choice instead of the kids choice, which is wrong.
I stated what happens to be reality, not what is right. Parents shape their children.

The condescending tone.
sexual dimorphism in humans in a manner that isn't just genitalia? yes, because there is literally nothing that PROVES girls are just inherently more x and y; all of it can be attributed to society. Even the research posted previously doesn't prove that it's an inherent trait; you severely underestimate the power of societal conditioning
I would say people who demand gender quotas severely over estimate societal conditioning. Society can't determine what you will like or what you want to do, it can only make you feel comfortable or uncomfortable when you try to do it.
Maybe instead of blaming the parents blame the whole society for only marketing dolls to girls and Lego's to boys?
Boys and Girls play with dolls. The way they play with dolls is different, which resulted in different types of dolls for each costumer group, not the other way around.

Where the fuck do you live? More than ever girls are being raised to be their own person and follow their dreams. Unless their dreams involve being housewives, in that case they're traitors of the movement.

Gender roles WORK. It got us this far and it got loads of other animals far as well. On top of that, you should read this to understand the whole pink x blue thing http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20141117-the-pink-vs-blue-gender-myth

Man and women brains are so different that even the rate of mental diseases and the type of mental diseases is different.
i am an engineer and when i go to class i see 2 girls in a group of 80, that shit ain't personal preferences thats probably girls being told their entire life that girls aren't good at science and it's for boys
That's a deviation from a pattern. The 2 girls versus 3.5 billion people is nothing.
yeah the deviation of the pattern that i see over all the science degrees i come into contact with? the deviation of the pattern that research in universities has pointed out? (engineering literally has a confirmed 15.2 men to 2.6 women)
there's probably some biotruths that affect the amount of women that go into STEM but a 80-20 ratio is not 60-40
