Hi.
I broke one of my cameras in South America.

My ladyfriend bought me a new camera, a Panasonic Lumix GH13 (the guy at the store "hacked" it).

The netbook I got isn't able to handle the video from the GH13 very well.
What is a good notebook computer to get?
Thank you,
Daniel Kemp
Can I ask, how did the guy at the store "hack it", exactly?
A price range and currency would be very helpful.

I think he is referring to the firmware hack to make it able to higher quality HD video.
"Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is now firmware hack for higher quality HD video recording"
I think he is referring to the firmware upgrade to make it able to higher quality HD video.

Fixed.

They put new firmware on it which makes it go from a GH1 to a GH13.

Around $1,500 or less should be good.
$1,500 might be a little unnecessary to watch HD footage on, a good netbook can do that fine, what else do you plan on using it for, any preference to size or harddrive capacity? (I assume you might need a bit considering you'll be storing HD footage).
A little bit more information is needed as there are thousands of laptops in the $1,500 range all suited for different things.
I have a notebook worth about $400 that can chew through HD video. You'd probably be looking at a midrange ASUS for $700 or so if you want longevity however.

Hi David.
What is your maximum budget? Around $1,500 is what my uncle will pay.
What country are you in? Right now, South Korea.
What will be the uses of this laptop? Surfing the Internet, editing some video.
Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? No.
What screen size do you require? Around 15 inches.
What screen resolution do you require? One that makes it easy to video edit.
Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? New.
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) I don't care.
What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? I don't really play games.
What operating system do you need? (if any) Windows or Apple.
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) I don't care.
How much hard drive space do you need? Enough to hold video from a Panasonic Lumix GH13.
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) No.
Is there anything else we need to know? Thanks.

OK. Cool. Thanks Protocol7.
That's probably enough information, although one more quick question, you said you want to hold video from that particular video camera whatnot, I know nothing about cameras but after a quick search it can record up to 1080i at 17Mbit/s, and depending on how much video you're wanting to hold or not it could sway the decision of the laptop. 300gb+ should be enough unless you plan to hold hours of uncompressed footage on it.
Also, are you buying it in South Korea or is your uncle planning on buying it and shipping it to you/you're going back to America?

But from what you've said so far, a mid-range 15" to 17" laptop should be fine, I'm not a fan of Apple at all, never owned a product from them and most likely never will, but honestly, this is one of the rare situations I might suggest a Macbook, they come bundled with great software albeit expensive (from what I've heard, even from others who dislike Apple) and if you can get a student or other they only a little bit expensive, if you have to pay full price for one though I wouldn't suggest it. As Protocol7 said though, watching HD video isn't very taxing to a modern computer.
Do you already have software for video editing or are you planning on buying it..?

Hi David.
I plan on buying it in South Korea. I don't think Apple has official Apple Stores in South Korea, but lots of people have iPhones here.
I'm not set on any specific video editing program.
