I have been thinking for a while at buying a new graphics card, and this one caught my eye:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121357&cm_re=dx11_2gb-_-14-121-357-_-Product
I told my friend about this card, and he noted that it used a PCIe 2.1 slot.
My motherboard is using PCie 2.0 X16 and I do not have the option of buying a new motherboard.
Can PCIe 2.1 cards run on 2.0 ports?
My current card is an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT, and I have to turn most games quality near minimum to run them effectively.
EDIT:
this is all Wikipedia has to say on PCIe 2.1:
PCI Express 2.1
PCI Express 2.1 supports a large proportion of the management, support, and troubleshooting systems planned to be fully implemented in PCI Express 3.0. But, the speed is the same as PCI Express 2.0.
Yes.
if you have a 7300 GT, are you SURE you won't be bottlenecked by CPU? 4 GHz Core 2 Duos bottleneck it
what's the rest of your system, including case and PSU

if you mean my main CPU power, its and intel core 2 quad 2.66GHz.
my current card doesn't work well with my large screen.
4GB of ram, and i'm not sure if i should get another 4 gb, or this card. It all depends if i get the ram as a birthday present or not.
And check your case size. The last thing you want to happen is the video card not fitting because your case doesn't have that 2cm you need.

I REALLY do not need to worry about my case, its a fucking monster.
its company didn't do so well by the time I bought it, and it stopped making cases.
this makes me pissed off because the side fan, the usb protector at the top, and one of the legs are all broken, and I cannot find replacement parts.
this is the only link i can find to the case, because the company website's link is gone.

it is s 23 inches deep, so space does not matter.
EDIT:
oops, forgot PSU.
i need to mind my spare, i'll finish this post when I find it.
EDIT:
my foot was resting on it, and it is the same model as the one in my pc.
Antec NeoPower 550
Intel DP43TF

You'll be able to use a 5970.
also that case looks like an xclio ripoff. Which is a bad thing, because xclio is ugly.
If you get the RAM as a present then ok, but don't go buy it instead of the 5970. 4gb of RAM is more than addiquit.
Also if you got the card, I'd look into overclocking your q6600 to 3 or 3.4ghz if you could. Would eliminate any bottleneck.

That case is so goddamn ugly goddamn

I bought it for the specs.
7 expansion slots on the back, 7 hard drive bays, 5 5.5 inch bays on the front

And you need these so that you can use all 5 BD/DVD drives at once, and have a 7-way RAID 0? That's a bad criteria to pick your case on, unless you're one of those people that burns pirated media and sells it.

I used to do that. Been thinking of getting back into it because I am completely poor.
PCI-E 2.1 cards are actually just 2.0 cards with some of the perks of PCI-E 3.0
In short, yes it'll run on a 2.0 slot. It was meant to.
PCI-E is currently fully back- and forward compatible, no matter the version number.

This is how ALL hardware upgrades are supposed to be.
