Downgrading from 4.0.2 to 3.1.2/3.1.3 (iTouch 2g MC)

So me and my silly mind decided to update my ipod to 4.0.2. Big mistake it was, because I thought it was possible to downgrade. And iOS4 sucks, it rapes my battery. So I looked on the internet for a guide and found one. However, it said something about SSH blobs or something like that and it is not something I know about. It said that if I chose an option in the past to save my 'blobs' on Cydia's server or so, I can downgrade and if I had not, then I can not downgrade.
Now lucky me, I got the option to save it before upgrading and I did it. I was on 3.1.2 back then. Now I obviously want to go back. The guide instructed me to modify the host file so when Apple checks whether the firmware is signed, it redirects to Saurik's server. However, after a while it says something like "Apple is checking the file" and stays like that. Doesn't freeze, but just continues checking it forever.
What might I be doing wrong? Is there not any other way?
Can you show us what line is in your hosts file?
I am not on my pc right now but this line is it:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
Hmm. That's strange. I assume this has been multiple times. Try entering into DFU mode and restoring.
I forgot to mention I was in DFU mode when I tried it (the tutorial said it)
thanks for your suggestions
in DFU mode, you should be able to downgrade to any firmware for your model. I usually try to restore the same firmware version first, and interrupt it on purpose when the white bar starts going across the screen. Then I can usually downgrade to an earlier firmware if I so desire.

It's not the same for the new iDevices. Firmware MUST be signed/authorised by Apple before you can install it (Hence Cydia backs up your SHSH, to mimic the signing procedures)

This is all wrong. Firmware must be signed before you can restore it to an MC model iDevice.
So I selected that option called 'Make my life easier' or something on cydia when I had 3.1.2. What does this mean? Should I actually be able to downgrade freely or only to 3.1.2?

Run it, select cydia as the source, 3.1.3 or 3.1.2(There is no difference, use whichever you have backed up). If it downloads the SHSH blob then you can downgrade. Otherwise, you're screwed.

If Cydia backed up your SHSH for 3.1.2, then you should be able to downgrade it that specific version ONLY, after changing your host file to redirect all traffic going to gs.apple.com to the Cydia SHSH server.

Yes there is. The 3.1.3 jailbreak is untethered whilst 3.1.2 is not.

spiritjb is untethered

...That's what I just said, the 3.1.3 jailbreak is untethered

spirit is not just 3.1.3

Didn't work for me when I tried it.
It's probably just my device then.
Hey guys, Cydia has SHSHs on file for 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and, 4.0 and 4.0.2, but TinyUmbrella says I don't have any SHSH. :frown: Why?

My 3.1.2 was spirit jailbreaked (and untethered)
Thanks for the suggestion on that program, will try now

does this mean I can't downgrade? :(
connect your idevice, set it to use cydia, save the 3.1.2 shsh.
then the window will say you can use it. it only shows ones stored locally.
edit:
actually, you might just have to connect your idevice for them to show up.
Noooo, but .. nooo!

How could this be, I am very sure I pressed the 'make my life easier' back in 3.1.2.
before feb 4th ish?
if you did it after then apple had already stopped signing 3.1.2
try 3.1.3
otherwise you're completely screwed, sorry
No, cydia asked me that question just recently, a week ago or something. And I got this itouch quite some before februari (also jailbreaked it I believe before feb). I wonder why it has never asked me before. I'll try 3.1.3 tomorrow, but I guess I'm screwed. I just wish they release a lighter version of iOS4
Is it then possible to downgrade to 4.0.1 or is that the same story?
Same story. SHSH is needed
