So we've got like $2,200+ to spend. What do we spend it on?
Do you have any particular reservations about holding on to the money for an extended period of time?
Donate 80-90% to charities, save the rest for raffle events. IIRC this was what most people agreed with last time it was brought up as well.
That's my feelings as well, I'd rather not jizz a load to charities for no apparent reason and then not have the money when a really good idea comes along.
People are obviously adverse to spending it (mostly because there's not really anything to spend it on that would benefit the community that hasn't already been suggested). What exactly is wrong with donating to charities and why is that a bad idea?
Just to clarify -- the last time I read about the fund, it sounded like it was closing due to the lack of requests. Is it because you're frustrated people aren't putting in the time to put a solid plan together or is it something else?
(it sucks that you can't delete irrelevant parts of a quote anymore) Hezzy didn't say there's anything wrong with donating it to charities. He just said jizzing most of it away on charities would suck if sometime in the near future, someone comes up with a banging idea, but since we donated most of the community fund to a charity, we can't afford it or have to save up for who knows how long.
There's nothing wrong with donating to charities but the whole idea behind the community fund is that the money goes to the community. Sending it to a charity is a noble cause but it isn't what I envisaged when I started the fund. The fund was closing in the respect that we weren't accepting donations. I did this in anticipation that we'd be switching over to the new forums in the next few months, low and behold it happens the next day completely out of the blue! Exactly. Like we gave out about $2000 worth of games in the Christmas raffle. What's to say we won't do it again?
Just seems really redundant to be asking this again is the point I was trying to get at. People will make events when they want to make events. All the last thread showed was that there's lots of people who "would like to do something but don't have the time / knowledge / expertise / planning abilities to pull it off." Another idea: As the community manager it'd be pretty cool to see some community events from you which are hosted for prizes or something. Maybe a monthly or bi-monthly event or something. Just spitballing ideas if we really need to spend this money now.
Do we have to spend it immediately? Like right now? Because I'm thinking maybe we could do some kind of summer time event similar to christmas one? Most people have a lot more time during the summer compared to december where people are being festive with friends & family, so we might have a lot more participation.
put it in the slot machine, big boy $50 slaps and see what happens
you could try embezzling it, i've heard that's a lot of fun
putting the fund towards a FP summer bbq in the UK with hostel accommodation would be legit
Is there an island we can buy somewhere? That's always been a Facepunch goal for as long as I can remember.
Yea i also say we just do a summer time event like we did on the christmas event, and use the steam summer sale to buy a ton of cheap shit.
Community servers? I feel like the community gaming part of FP has kind of died down, if not died completely.
It's already been tried a couple of times but they died out pretty quickly
A tournament of some kind with games or something for winners or a really bad convention somewhere would be good.
Use it to hire someone to make a mobile css.
This I guess but also maybe an in person element to it as well? Will have to think
Sponsor my racecar, let the community design the livery.
I agree to this only if the Oify can design it.
Would be cool if of my $20 I have invested here would still get my gold rank recognized. It's a shame that I don't have a chance anymore...
I'm not sure the car will pass tech inspection then
no one leaves near you
How about a video game tournament? A prize pool would give people an incentive to play games with other facepunchers - it's a community fund after all, so getting people more involved with each should be a priority. I mean, raffles are great and all, but "rate this post to maybe win something" doesn't necessarily engage you in anything.
just throw it at a charity and be done with it
blackjack and hookers.
pizza party for the opening of newpunch!
Anyone else remember those good old threads where an island/castle/bunker/whatever would be for sale for some crazy amount of money? Imagine if the fund had been allowed to grow for a lot longer - it would be hilarious to actually make "Facepunch Island" a reality. Not that it would be of much use. I'm a bit jaded about the whole charity idea. I know it's for a good cause but I think I am not alone in having very little trust in most charities. I would much rather see the money spent on the Facepunch community. Maybe someone can think of a way to draw more (good) users to the site? Something to bring attention to the forums perhaps? (Obviously not ads) Definitely think Hezzy should hold on to the money and wait for a good idea to come up, assuming he doesn't mind doing that. It would be a shame rushing to find the fastest and easiest way to piss the money away. Overall I just think it's sad that the fund could not go on, I thought it was such a great idea to actually be able to do things as a community - and lack of projects I don't think is necessarily a bad thing.
