Holy shit what?! How does something like this even come up? Do these systems have flags that go off when they put in some matching DNA that links them to all recorded cases with the same matching DNA? I'm glad they caught the guy though, what a sicko.

Pretty much, yeah, they have databases of all the evidence collected over the years including DNA, fingerprints, et-al, and when you enter evidence from a new crime and/or arrest the computer will automatically check it against existing entries to see what matches up. Mostly used to try to get underneath fake identities criminals are so common to give out, but in some cases like this one it can auto-solve cold cases.

It makes sense. I've just always seen it on TV and movies and thought it to be like the enlarge / enhance bits. There must be so much information stored in those files. The collective data has to be astronomical.
