https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/135/f5878741-51db-41f0-8a8b-02e56b1c3554/image.png ok what the heck is la-mulana it's pretty hard to capture in words but the gist of it is, it's a puzzle platform metroidvania where you assume the control of lemeza kosugi, an archeologist who has been taunted by his father to find the ruins of la-mulana and unearth its secrets. in classic metroidvania style, you will travel through unique areas, find items that will help you on your journey, solve cryptic puzzles, dodge dodgy traps, and discover the truth behind the ruins and their guardians. all armed with your whip, your laptop and the classic quote "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again." it is a love letter to old msx games, developed by nigoro, a small indie team who for the most part did flash games. it started out as a freeware, msx-styled game released in 2005 and was later remade for the wii shop and the pc in 2011/2012. it's a really cool game ok? ok. it's pretty rough and difficult, but an experience I highly recommend anyone who loves metroidvanias to go through. the art is top notch, and the soundtrack unforgettable. ok cool where do I get it?? You can get the original freeware, "MSX" version here (or download the patched version here) You can get the remake PC version here (Playism), here (GOG) and here (Steam) Additionally, the demo for the sequel is over here (direct download) in case you're itching to try that out. Be sure to visit the kickstarter page for more info! https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/135/20b2285a-f843-4f73-93e1-1e873b6d7ed0/image.png this game is bullshit!! yeah. it can get downright bullshit at times, so here are a few tips: keep a guide handy! while solving some of the more difficult puzzles yourself is REALLY satisfying, you probably will find yourself at a dead end at some point and may need some direction on what to do next, in classical metroidvania fashion. there is no shame in doing it with some outside help. read the manual for the remake! it contains some few vital clues relevant throughout the game to help you solve some of the more cryptic puzzles. keep a notepad handy, and don't be afraid to take screenshots. some murals have visual clues that you will need to remember, and you should write down any clues to puzzles you come across. although you will have software in-game for you to use, it has limited amounts of slots and takes up precious memory on your laptop item. the holy grail is the most important item you will get. it will allow you to save at, and teleport to, the various grail tablets you'll find in every area. think out the box. some clues are cryptic, while others just flat out give you the answer. make sure to read each and every tablet you can find. hell temple is definitely worth the reward. each area is like a coin, and every coin has a front side and a back side. some things require you to whip several times. however, be careful not to whip anything that could be considered sacred. for the remake, look out for an eye. if there is an eye present in the room, be careful where you swing your weapon! visiting xelpud, the helpful village leader with any key items equipped will have him comment on them. some of these may be useful. others not. xelpud is a silly fuck. you'll come across ROMs/software for your computer throughout your journey. some of these may produce an effect when coupled with other ROMs/software... https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/135/d6ac4f1c-e8ac-4be0-b10e-39584e967d12/image.png and in case you need a quick rundown on things, the local idol, mulbruk, is more than happy to help you get started! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtAFGes3Xdo what a lovely voice omg links La-Mulana Wiki La-Mulana Remake Wiki Website -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- anyways, at the time of writing, the completion of la-mulana 2 is coming closer and closer, from what this post on the subreddit have to say. im very excited, to say the least!
Didn't know there was a second one coming out. Guess it's time to actually beat the first one.
La-Mulana is a really cool game but it makes me question just how good I am at puzzles because I had to resort to a guide after like, the third boss. Once I got to [sp]Eden[/sp] I was genuinely at a loss for how anyone could've completed this game without a guide.
I remember hours and hours of backtracking in this game, looking for things I missed. I remember it being really cryptic and difficult, but man, the boss fights in this game are some of the absolute coolest shit. I love this one especially: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rse4D_Ne_FA And the soundtrack is great too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7UulnIcuC0
if you don't think this game's soundtrack is the bomb I don't believe you have ears
gates of guidancewas the point where I had to take a moment to seriously wonder what kind of madman would make such a cryptic fucking game, nevermind the bullshit instant death traps. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/135/9f4623a8-7f94-4c0c-95c1-00821ea40d5b/image.png thou art a fool
Man this game sounds and looks freaking awesome Thanks OP, you just made me buy it
Did la-mulana 2 ever come to fruition? I heard about it ages ago but back then it seemed it would take a long time.
I posted a link in the OP with an update on its development. it's pretty close to completion! a few details, some technical stuff and the soundtrack still are work in progress, but the game itself is pretty much feature complete! if I were a betting man, I'd wager its release being later this year.
Oh I missed it since it was straight at the bottom of the post, maybe you should put somewhere more important since it is pretty big news after all. Well thanks anyways for telling the news about la-mulana 2.
Gotcha. Forgot we have proper embeds now, so I've gone ahead and embedded the reddit thread in question, while touching up the OP a bit. If anyone have anything they want to add to the OP let me know. I'm sorely tempted to speedrun the game (without exploits) since I'm familiar with the majority of puzzles at this point, but La-Mulana is a fucking beast so I'm sure I've forgotten something very important. Completion under five hours shouldn't be impossible though, right?
Hey, after playing the remake a good few times, I'd consider La-Mulana to be one of my favourite videogames of all time. Currently working my way though the original for the first time, doing it mostly blind outside of a few tidbits of knowledge and my experience in the remake. I've only gotten to just before the half way point but it feels sorta like playing the game for the first time again. Plenty of differences between the versions in how they play and feel, it's really good.

Dear god I don't know what I'm doing but I'm digging it
Good luck. If you run into a dead end or get lost, I'll probably be able to point you in the right direction. There's also a guide on steam that focuses on giving hints onto the right lines of solving puzzles.
Thanks, I'll try to get as far as possible without looking for help. I love this already, actually taking notes and getting lost in a game is something I miss very dearly.
Aw man, I remember playing the freeware version of this game ages ago and getting completely stuck, haha. Was fun though, I should give it another shot.
i still havent done anything past the first screen in this game
Talk to Xelpud, the tent you start outside. He'll give you a rundown and install an email client where you'll get hints. Grab a hand scanner for 10g when you can and the translation software when you can afford it after exploring La-Mulana for a bit. You can get the shellhorn from the surface which will help you know when you solve puzzles. All you really need to do is figure out how to open La-Mulana and get that shellhorn. Funnily enough, not a lot of people get that far.

Bought this on PC after I saw the AGDQ run last year.
That run was honestly insane and had me on edge throughout. Crazy how buggy the game actually is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-H1Ghpxlls
Oops! I meant the run from SGDQ 2015.
New update on La-Mulana 2's development: In today's update, Naramura shows a bit of his work and shares some opinions. - He shares with us a variety of boss parts, not all of them, but enough to give us a small idea of what's coming to us. - Naramura comments about the fans that say that say they don't want to see game information so they can be surprised. He finds it pleasant and delightful to know that fans want a surprise, but in the other hand he needs to provide the updates. - He believes that it's part of the game to read the article and the game manuals before release, so he cannot understand the "zero content" attitude. But he respects that and will still bring us blog updates that bring us excitement but not as detailed. - He also adds that such information might change before release, and that they might even be lying! "Information warfare has already begun."
I bought that game in 2013, spent like 25 hours, and i still haven't beaten it yet, that game is haaaaard, but still in my favorite game list.
