There's not a lot one can really say in reaction to this... What a sad, sad situation. I'm honestly not sure what action can be taken by those of us on the outside to try and change what is going on there. It's a catch 22, like the article says - even those women who pay off their debts eventually return to that same work because they cannot find any employment or source of income anywhere else... And on top of that they are conditioned to believe that selling their bodies for sex, even against their will, is an acceptable way to earn a living. I think that because so many of them have families to support, that really forces their hand. I can't directly compare my life to what some of these people go through, but I can certainly understand why they would return to something so awful - there is nothing like having family that depends on you suffering and realizing you have no choice but to do the one thing you never wanted to do just to keep them healthy and alive. It's terrible. I feel for these people, I wish I could do something about it. Where does one even begin? Even they seem completely conflicted about how to tackle the situation - ban prostitution and sure you cut down on the visible street-side prostitution, but it will still happen behind closed doors and all you've done is destroy the majority of paying work that those people were needing to support their families. Horrible.
Honestly the best way to help these people is regulating Prostitution. Similar to decriminalizing and making drugs/narcotics regulated by the government. Try anyway to remove the influence of the Mob from the lives of these women. It'll allow women who partake in the profession to be better protected by the law, and remove the mob's power so they can no longer force women to unwillingly become a part of the sex trade.
Regulation, or at least decriminalization, is so much better almost in every way, in everything we need to open up our minds a little more and realize that people come before religion and other matters
It will be impossible as seen that the new parties that have been elected just do not want to hear about those issues. And a government seems very far.
and while this Pope is very understanding and down to Earth, I doubt that the nation most close to the Vatican will be in favor of prostitution any time soon
At least we know who to thank in the next five years if we get a lot of decay in the streets as well as if mafia will further get deep into our government. Is ironical though as Lega was once in favor of prostitution and decriminalization of drugs.
