Hey peoples, I'm looking for a nice speaker for desktop usage. Preferably it would be something that my monitor could stand on. I don't need two speakers, if I'm playing games I'll use headphones anyway. I found that there are speaker 'bars' but then I would have to put it in front of my monitor or have some sort of monitor stand where it would be under that. Any suggestions or similar setups?
Not worth getting a single center speaker like that unless you really really have no space.
There are plenty of good quality, very compact bookshelf-style speakers (e.g. Kanto YU2s), depending on budget of course.
Another alternative would be to get a monitor with built in speakers (aka most of them these days) when you upgrade.
I bought a new one 6 months ago and I'm very happy with it. It has a jack output but not a speaker.
I'd say get some bookshelf speakers and put them under or behind you monitor sideways. Or maybe some portable speaker with an AUX input? Either way it is probably cheaper to look for a pair than for a single speaker.
If you want to go really cheap, look for somebody who had a 5.1 speaker setup and has leftover small ones and buy a cheap ebay amp for them.
If you just want a small speaker that doesn't take up a lot of space, you could find a good quality Bluetooth speaker with 3.5mm in, and just get a male to male 3.5mm cable.
That's what I did and it works great.
There is no market for mono speakers, either get a soundbar if it's about having one physical object, or just stereo speakers if it's about price. The option proto posted is gonna be more expensive than some simple stereo speakers, but probably the only way you are gonna get a small-footprint mono speaker.
Consider a sound bar, or a box that you can set your monitor on and put speakers inside of. A singular speaker won't do much good for acoustics.
Isn't a sound bar just exactly a singular speaker?
In most cases, it's a system of speakers in connection working in a single enclosure.
which also make use of the acoustics of the enclosure and the room to sound like they're a much larger system. (witchcraft)
I'd suggest if you're using it for non-gaming related junk like blasting music, just get a normal set of desktop speakers and plant them anywhere else. If you put them at the far corners of your desk, behind your monitor, facing outwards, you'll still be able to jam out to some tunes both at your desk and when around the room
I use a soundbar at my desk and I can confirm it is witchcraft.
It's incredibly loud too, and the subwoofer is nice.
What do you all think about this one?

If you need a monitor stand to put the soundbar under Monoprice make a real nice (and cheap, because Monoprice) tempered glass one. Currently my amp and DAC are under what's basically an exact clone with different branding.

I bought and will try out a SoundLink Mini II!
