Jeez, when it rains, it pours.
This is less of a rain storm and more of a hurricane.
WE ARE WITNESSING HISTORY UNFOLD. Holy shit. I never thought I'd see this day. The question is, how is Russia going to react to this?
Mueller's gonna have a field day with all of this.
I don't see Cambridge Analytica surviving this. Even if the ICO doesn't pounce on them, they've been humiliated and they carry way too much heat for most of their prospective clients to touch them with a bargepole. Question is whether Nix/other executives will face personal repurcussions
Nah, no way does the company survive this. Frankly, I think Nix, Bannon, and Mercer would have to have divine intervention not to find themselves in prison before this is over.
There's going to be offshoots pop up I'm sure of it. Whether or not Mercer or Nix will be involved is a different story. But these kind of shadowy groups tend to have plans to keep existing under a new front.
I imagine it'll go the same was as Blackwater did. They'll either rebrand or an entirely new entity with a lot of the same people will crop up after they're gone. Something tells me this is too lucrative and too important to certain people for it to just vanish.
All year I've been trying to figure out how Russian trolls and other disinformation agents targeted voters with damn near surgical precision. It didn't make sense that a handful of people on another content, most of whom speak English as a second language, could be so attuned to the political and cultural vulnerabilities bubbling up through the cracks of the U.S. electorate, much less manufacture such wide-ranging effects. I suppose it seems obvious in retrospect that social media played a key roll in all this by supplying the raw data, but without professionals who have the knowledge and resources to make sense of it all, such a massive subversion of a U.S. election would be impossible. Now it seems we have the missing link.
What’s stopping them from doing something drastic when the jig’s up? We know they’ve penetrated the US power grid systems on multiple occasions.
I miss the optimism rating like sure I'm in your corner here nodding vigorously, and yeah sure we've already sent a few goons to the brig thanks to Mueller, but I've been let down by politics for decades now so even cautious optimism to me feels like counting chickens before they hatch
That's what i'm afraid of. Right now they are calling they're reserve for a quick response drill. Without sounding like a raging conspiracy theorist, it would be Russia's window of opportunity to get a massive headstart since the United States would be in total chaos. I am really afraid for what the future holds.
We're basically looking at the use of weaponized data. If you're not afraid at some level, I really don't know what to tell you. This is what at the core of it, a lot of our dystopic fictions are about.
Right on cue: Wikileaks has dropped the distraction for Fox News and the Trump Administration to seize. https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/975863243263508480 Wikileaks has become nothing other than a propaganda machine. What a goddamn shame.

The replies to that WikiLeaks tweet are fucking atrocious. It’s like the propaganda machine’s response to having its cover blown are to double down and crank up the misinformation to 9000. I have a sneaking suspicion that this will get significantly worse before it gets better.
The thing I hate about this is how there's never a consistency in the messaging, it's just whatever works in the moment to defend Trump. The video is clearly implying that it is a bad thing that Democrats got data from Facebook and kept it: So.. Isn't it bad that Trump did it too? Or do they cancel each other out? You can't have it both ways. Either collecting all this data is acceptable or it is not acceptable (and that's assuming the Obama campaign and the Trump campaigns methodology was equivalent, too). You can't say "it was okay for Trump, but bad for Obama", but of course that's what they say anyway.
This is so unbelievably brazen that you'd have to have some kind of actual mental illness to still believe Wikileaks is a legitimate source of information.
One is using data in a positive light of normal political support with the consent of the person using the app, the other steals the data from the person without asking and then using it to churn false information to fuel more friction between both parties. To everyone acting like suddenly all this will matter, it might matter for swing voters, but for the average republican they are too far gone in the rabbit hole to be dug out. All i hear around me is how the entire media system is out to fuck poor trump. Or its shit like above with videos out of context or purely lies that said people reblog and push all over trying to prove all their nonsense is true. Facebook has unknowingly made the world's biggest echo chamber, an average person might not believe just a random video that sounds crazy. But when you have your parents/friends/family whom you look up to reblog and echo what they see, it has a wave effect that hits everyone along the way. We have reached an age of mass media with almost no filter to tell whats real and whats fake. It was only time till some global power seized that and used it to cause mass hysteria and destruction.
