Jordan Peele is following his first Oscar win by reuniting with his former collaborator and friend Keegan-Michael Key. The comedy duo will star in Henry Selick’s new stop-motion film for Netflix titled “Wendell and Wild.” The filmmaker is a pioneer in the stop-motion animation genre thanks to his classic films “Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Coraline.” The director hasn’t released a film since the latter title in 2009.
Key and Peele will voice demon brothers who try to scheme their way out of hell by facing off against their arch-enemy. Peele is also helping Selick and co-writer Clay McLeod Chapman with the script. The actor won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay this year thanks to his breakout directorial effort “Get Out.” Argentinian artist Pablo Lobato will tackle the animated character designs for the film.
The two comedians spent five seasons as the creators and stars of Comedy Central’s sketch comedy series “Key & Peele.” The show won a Peabody Award and two Emmys during its run. In addition to “Wendell and Wild,” Peele aims to being production on his next directorial effort this fall and is producing Spike Lee’s “Black Kingsman.”
Netflix has not given a release date for “Wendell and Wild.”
I'm just happy to see more stop motion coming out, dying art for sure.
Stop motion films take a ton of effort to create and don't make nearly as money as the average dumb CGI kid cartoon. It's no wonder the genre is struggling so much. Like, that rumor of Isle of Dogs not getting a full release may have turned out to be false, but it still ain't gonna make much money. Shaun the Sheep was possibly the best movie Aardman Studios has ever made, and it pretty much bombed. Meanwhile all Illumination has to do is animate Minions farting onscreen for 90 minutes, and bam, instant profit.
I make it my mission to support any artsy movie coming out. Excited to see isle of dogs and this looks like it could be super cool as well
Shaun the Sheep made back it's budget 5 times over. Aardman is fine.
In a way I feel like it's a shame that Laika has set the bar for stop-motion so damn high. Coraline is legitimately one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen and I'm guessing Kubo and the Two Strings is even better, though I haven't had the opportunity to see it yet.
It is likely the best stop-motion movie of all time in terms of visuals, excellent story too, it is or was on Netflix.
I'd feel kind of bad watching it on Netflix, knowing how much Laika is financially struggling.
