Still not there yet. Someday soon, maybe.
Looks pretty good, the only thing that threw me off was how shiny her skin is. Looks like she is really sweeting it up.
I would have laughed so hard if the Andy Serkis video ended with him saying "Come meet me at the Vicon booth, and see for yourself!"
That top video has a real case of O mouth for some reason. I don't think it'd look like that in real life. If it did it does not look natural.
I wish there was a side-by-side with the mocap. Then you could see if the actress is making the O face or the computer.
Keep in mind this is realtime
That andy serkis one looks real good. I wish animation tech would get something completely new, because the animation is really what makes it look artificial
Exactly. I kinda get the feeling she was asked to do that to show the limits of the animation program, it just comes off as unnatural. Still, for real time animation this is really good.
It's still clearly artificial, and these are the only things being rendered. Hence, why I think we've still got a ways to go. It's impressive that they've come this far, but they've still got a ways to climb out of the valley.
Not quite there, but it looks great nonetheless. I feel like we've overcome the worst part of the uncanney valley, at least. It's becoming less "uncomfortable".
first vid looks better with the lighting Andy seemingly staring into nothing looked weeeeird
It's not an if, but a when.
i dunno man, this is still deeply lodged in the uncanny valley for me amazing that it's in real time though
Nice find!
Is it weird that I find the alien version of the Andy Serkis monologue to be more convincing the the original? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1P37YM1_wE
Well no wonder it doesn't look normal, they're barely alike. The character model's mouth is much smaller. Wonder why they did that.
That's cause we're really good at recognizing all the subtleties in human faces and their expressions. Even with all that that fancy mocap, they still look a little off
In the second one he never blinks and that's what really throws me off
Can't wait for the day when I can leave my body in stasis and just live out some sort of wild GTA satiric fantasy in VR.
God... this is obscenely beautiful
While it doesn't look 100% photoreal I feel like this is photogoodenough, it completely captures the actor's performance and doesn't really have that uncanny valley effect. It looks good in the way a really high production CGI movie would look good, sort of hyper real.
The arms look weird
they also did star wars https://youtu.be/J3ue35ago3Y
This is the type of stuff I like to see. Every time they try to make a photo-realistic representation of a human, it always looks super creepy and I can always tell it's not real. But when you use that tech to make a creature, or an alien, or a dragon, it really shines. Even when it was done really well in Rogue One when they did a full CGI Tarkin, it looked great but it still just didn't look quite right. I don't know if they can ever escape the uncanny valley effect, unless they just ditch trying to perfectly recreate a human digitally and just focus on making something that's obviously not human but looks close enough without being creepy.
I mean yeah, we're not out of it, but if you compare this to some of the stuff we got a few years ago, it's getting better.
for people who want to see the entire gdc confrence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwKeLsTG12A
That alien is cool as hell, I can only imagine a game like Mass Effect using tech like this for cutscenes since it's fairly fast and realtime to capture. I don't mind that it's uncanny almost at all. The progress in this stuff is great, makes me want to make machinimas again.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care about this obsession with photorealism in games and animation? I recently played through Killer 7 and despite having low polygon models even for the time it looks amazing because of it's art direction making it look like a moving comic book with harsh shadows and poping colours. Not only does it fit the tone and style the game is going for but it makes the game incredibly memorable and charming.
