High government isn't overly concerned with facts. This isn't just limited to the whole "fake news" thing, either. Even before this administration, there was the whole "trickle down" myth, which works based off of the false premise that employers will invariably pay workers more if they have more money.
Facts will be discarded, or even purposefully denied when is convenient for them. This just makes that process even easier, you don't have to deny studies which turn up undesirable results if those studies don't occur in the first place.
That is to say, the only reason to do this is self-serving bullshit.
The very government that says "we have to make legislation based on the facts" decides to conveniently ignore any fact that inconveniences them by denying them the funds or voice to have any impact via repeatable, record-able, tangible data.
