Personally I hate it when the moderators misinterpret the thread or do not answer the full question and then close it. This recently happened in one of my threads; https://rust.facepunch.com/f/rustsrvr/bslqj/Rustralasia/1/ where I said a) the severs were down and b) the website was down. I wasnt sure what was going on because both the severs and website was down. The moderator offered 0 helpful information and proceeded to warn me about getting banned, i wanted to reply and tell them that they hadnt answered my question but i couldnt, therefore I think there should be a PM option!
From garry's blag:
Private Messaging is one. There’s issues with private messaging in vbulletin, but it’s probably not unique to vbulletin. I can open the database and view any private messages. That doesn’t feel very private. It feels like for them to actually be private messages it should be encrypted in a way that I, or anyone else with database access, can’t view. This is why I’ve resisted adding such a system so far. Someone suggested simply calling them “direct messages”.
Part of me thinks the smart way would be to make it so users can email other users via the forums, and it’ll come from their email address. So once they reply we’re out of it, it’s a private email thread between those two parties. There’s a divide there though, and spammer issues. But it’s something we’re thinking of.
I don't necessarily need a "private" message system. A direct message system would be nice to have though.
It's easier if I want to ask someone a question about something over a direct message, instead of over a thread where I have to wait quite a while in hope for the person to re-look at the thread.
whether it is private or public or direct doesnt really matter, it would just be nice to have a messaging system
I agree, and we should have one. I just want to be able to send someone a message directly to the person himself. Maybe even writing on their profile's? Like previous?
I don't know if this has been mention before, but what about a visitor message system too?
What about multiple walls where people can post stuff on on your profile?
For example a moderator would have 3 walls:
<GIBBERISH> <REPORTS> <SERIOUS INQUIRIES>
HI BUDD guy did something wrong How do you manage your time with school and FP?
Would this maybe be something that is actually do-able? This way you don't need to have a DM/private system, it's all shared and the posts will be organized.
And maybe for really serious inquiries regarding donations / private stuff, set up an email where only the mods can go on?
I think what would really solve this (if its possible) is a button that directly DM'd someone through Discord.
Since Discords induction, I'm using it a lot more than I ever would to send messages privately. You can keep tabs on your logs better than steam and you still get that security/encryption that you desire
Direct Messages seem like the best way to handle it to me. People are looking for direct 1-to-1 communication with another user, not to share intimate details and participate in lengthy erotic stories with one-another. If they did have something genuinely private to ask, they could send a DM asking for another form of communication that would be more private, such as an instant messager or email.
To be fair, not everyone uses Discord (me). I didn't use vBulletin PM's a ton, but they were pretty useful in a few cases. Honestly I don't care about Garry reading my messages to people, anything genuinely sensitive would be shared on a different platform after we exchanged emails, phone numbers, Steam info, etc. I'd be happy with just implementing old-style PM's that are technically insecure, as long as regular users can't read them.
@Tlean the other thread is closed so I ping you here
Do you have some skills and tools to do IP-Bans?

I can remember that my college and me got banned at work cause we had the same ip range 5-6years ago :/
I think it'd be cool to get visitor messages back at least, those are public, and add a bit of spice to profiles too. Because at the moment, you have no reason to go to a users profile unless it's to click the link to see their other posts, seeing as you can't PM them or leave public message
Quoting post and mentioning someone @aeeh as a test for something (ignore this)
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
