that's an odd list to say the least lol. how the hell did those games get the nominee over hollow knight?? but yeah of the ones nominated no shit night in the woods is the best on there
Cuphead might not have been considered since Microsoft funded them in exchange for exclusivity. Dunno about why Hollow Knight wasn't considered.
They're both listed under 'honorable mentions' so they were considered, just not picked for final nominations.

Glad to see Tormentor X Punisher was at least nominated in Excellence in Audio. That game's sound design and soundtrack are super fucking satisfying.
Into the Breach definitely deserved the nomination though. Might not be as good as FTL was, but it's up there as one of my favorite indies in a long time, and Ben Prunty did fantastic with the soundtrack yet again.
A Hat in Time didn't even get an honorable mention... man first it got knocked out of the VGAs and now the IGF. I was really hoping my GOTY would get something...
Heat Signature is pretty fucking great. I managed to get just shy of 50 hours out of it. Planning on going back and getting the last 4 achievements I need at some point as well.

Congrats to the NiTW devs, they deserve it, tho I think I would have been happy with any of the nominees winning. Last year was packed with incredible indie titles. My favourite was probably Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, which might not be a popular choice but I found a lot to enjoy from it. Beat it over 70 times so far and it's still my go to game if I wanna take a short break, once you get used to it you can beat it in about or under 15 minutes.

Well deserved, I think. I can't speak for some of the other games, but NitW definitely spoke to me on a pretty personal level. It might not be traditionally fun like some of the other games, but its narrative was excellent. Sometimes a good story just beats good gameplay.
Glad to see it managed to get an award.
Is Night in the Woods an indie game technically? Its developers and publisher seem to be separate entities
I mean the game was totally funded by a kickstarter the devs ran years back, so I'd assume that's enough to call it Indie.

Yeah, I definitley agree with the "not traditionally fun" part. I know a lot of the criticisms of the game stem from the lack of actual gameplay, which is fair. Something I like to equate it to is the Animal Crossing series, where a lot of the appeal comes from just wandering around town, chatting with townsfolk and basically just chilling out. NITW just has more depression, rural decay, and socioeconomic commentary than Animal Crossing.
