Thankfully they decided that the EU and a few other countries would be exempt from the tariffs for now. It'll be interesting to see how China responds.
As I said before - arbitrarily going out of our way to piss off China during the North Korea situation is such a brilliant idea!
It seems to me he wants to stir up as much shit as he can before leaving office. The shit he's already done will take decades to reverse. I really am afraid for world peace.
Ah yes, let's piss off one of the biggest world powers in terms of trade and manufacturing, that's a splendid idea- if you're a fat, diaper-shitting moron.
The part about China forcing companies doing business in China to give up their intellectual property so that China can copy it - is it true? Even if a trade war might be the wrong way to go about it it's definitely an issue that needs to be addressed by the US and EU together.
It, and other things such as the Chinese's own tariffs are important issues to deal with but fucking over America's poor isn't a great way of doing it.
Currency manipulation is called monetary policy and it's something every country does. Also china's manipulation has largely been trying to retain a high value... that makes buying American goods cheaper for the Chinese. Unskilled jobs have no reason to stay in the US because of comparative advantage, and it's only gonna get worse over time until people acknowledge that those jobs are untenable. These things are what trade deals are supposed to give means of addressing, along with the WTO. Companies moving back to the US still fucks over the majority of consumers. Trade is just like automation in that's it's positive on the net, while harmful to a few specific individuals albeit with potential of compensation to make every individual better. Just about every instance of protectionism (aside from certain scarce subsidies) is found to be so inefficient that you would have been better off just redistributing the money into welfare and protecting the person, instead of trying to protect his job.
Expert Businessman Part of me thinks he's doing it on purpose because he's trying to sabotage the US, under orders from Putin. A larger part of me realizes that this may just be normal behavior for the narcissistic idiot that he is. Or maybe it's both, with Russia telling him "hey you know what would be a good idea, put tariffs on China" and he believes them.
For demagogues like Trump and their demographics protectionism has always been a very popular idea. Perot pushed it for example.

China seems to almost care about their environment more than the US does at this point. Not so much on the employee protection, but they're savvy enough to know that poisoned workers don't work too well.
