Tumblr outs 84 accounts it says are trying to game you.
Only 84?
That they've found concrete proof of so far, that's for sure.
>[...] Tumblr will add to the list as more users fit the site's criteria.
Assuming that's an actual position they're taking and pursuing more may be on the way out.
Luckily nobody uses Tumblr so their reach was limited
Most the tumblrs i follow are porn. And i can assure you, i have not seen any Russian propaganda porn. Yet.
Oh jesus that gave me a scary thought. What if the propagandists of the world could find a way to make porn that has an influential effect on people? The free world would be absolutely doomed.
Jesus, cnet is a fucking garbage fire of a website.
Public record of usernames linked to state Direct link to the list, so you can avoid the ugly as fuck site design and autoplay earrape.
Makes me wonder just how deep this rabbit hole goes.
Poor Zabivaka...
I got an email
Dear dai,
As part of our commitment to transparency, we want you to know that we uncovered and terminated 84 accounts linked to Internet Research Agency or IRA (a group closely tied to the the Russian government) posing as members of the Tumblr community.
The IRA engages in electronic disinformation and propaganda campaigns around the world using phony social media accounts. When we uncovered these accounts, we notified law enforcement, terminated the accounts, and deleted their original posts.
While investigating their activity on Tumblr, we discovered that you either followed one of these accounts linked to the IRA, or liked or reblogged one of their posts:

You aren’t in trouble, and don’t need to take any action if you don’t want to. We deleted the accounts but decided to leave up any reblog chains so that you can curate your own Tumblr to reflect your own personal views and perspectives.
Democracy requires transparency and an informed electorate and we take our disclosure responsibility very seriously. We’ll be aggressively watching for disinformation campaigns in the future, take the appropriate action, and make sure you know about it.

dug around for some of these names, most don't show up at all, some show up with some unimportant interjections in other people's posts where you wouldn't pay attention to it, and most of them share a common theme of posting neat but unrelated reshare bait years ago.

this is a pretty common account farming thing, where they steal cool content that's guaranteed to get attention, build up followers/consistent incoming notifications, then turn around these well established blogs to sell to people who want an immediate base of viewers; usually that results in spammers who are basically paying for a few view impressions before they get banned. Doesn't surprise me these things would get bought up by literal info warfare ops
so 9gag was russian propaganda all along 🤔🤔
I think "resharing shit from 9gag's daily popular page" turned to "police the police" enforces the "follower-farming before becoming politically polarizing blogs" theory lmao
Wow, the 9gag army really stepped up their game, shitposting a president into office!

oh my
rerr...?
Some furry twink porn blog I was following was really offended by Tumblr sending him that message about him having interacted with one of the Russian accounts; very typical scaremongering about how conservatives are being oppressed.
in the past few days I've seen a number of individuals and full news articles talking about how some of these blogs were dumb things like furries and/or porn blogs, since they were all likely hijacked/sold high-traffic accounts. Setheverman was even called out by name by New York Magazine for having reblogged from one, all the while mocking the post as if it's part of the russian blog garbage

The propaganda they detected was all hard-deleted from the site. The blogs were deactivated and unavailable. All that remains is reblogs archived to everyone else's pages pages of content that was reblogged before they were taken over, when most of them clearly renamed from dumb shit to socially/politically charged names. Most of these also probably (soft)deleted the existing blog's contents when rebranding, so people wouldn't be aware of the shifts
