I feel like this sums up everything the New Colossus was trying to do in one scene... The New Order had a great feel to it and it was like NC was really uneven (that being said I still enjoyed it)
Love this game though
J was such a neat addition to the game.
Tbf the whole story of NC is focused around BJ and why hes the way he is (to the point that the main game plot feels like it takes the backseat). The tonal shift with the side characters was eugh, but BJ and his characterization why he thinks differently and wants a true free america was 10/10.
Ehh, I felt they kind of over justified him. We were perfectly willing to accept in TNO that Blazko was just a 6 foot wall of pure FREEDOM who didn't need a reason to kill Nazis beyond the fact that he's American and they're Nazis. It seems like NC just gave him every possible reason someone could have to hate Nazis. Although Hitler's characterization was good.
see, I always thought TNO had that Hemmingway style of "show, don't tell" which is why I liked it so much. you could kind of think for yourself about his backstory from the few musings he gave which imo carried a lot more weight given how sparsely they were said and how powerful they were
i always thought one of the reasons people liked tno so much was because it didn't just characterize bj as a stupid meathead who wanted to kill nazis because generic badguys rip and tear and more as a 'warrior-poet' who wanted to fight for true freedom, hence all of his interactions with the various side-characters in tno and musings to himself throughout the entire game.
hell even doom 2016 kind of went down that route with characterizing doomguy and giving his 'backstory'. even if its not the focus of the game there is definitely a focus on characterization in both titles.
I didn't mean to imply he was a meathead, to me it felt like all it took for BJ in TNO to do the things he did was simply having morality and by showing the level of evil he was fighting against. But then in TNC they decided to give him an abusive racist father and a Jewish mother. It really rubbed me the wrong way because TNC constantly tried to say that BJ is the way he is because his father was a horrible person, TNO simply said that BJ himself is a good person, he didn't need any more justification than that. I generally dislike this approach to character justification, you can be opposed to something without having been personally victimized by it in every way possible.
It was always heavily implied before that he was at least partly Jewish iirc (especially with the polish last name)
didnt he know Yiddish in tno?
and then there’s all these cryptic lines he gives throughout the game like “my people murdered. So many times. I lost count.” Etc. Which have a lotta double meaning
Plus it was solidified in The Old Blood with him confirming the date of Purim.
I liked how Super Bunny Hop put it: the Nazis in The New Order are Nazis, the Nazis in The New Colossus are your parents.
