Volkswagen has taken parking lots to a whole new level in the US – and will not be emptying them soon.
Volkswagen AG has paid more than $7.4bn to buy back about 350,000 US diesel vehicles, a recent court filing shows. The German automaker has been storing hundreds of thousands of vehicles around the US for months.
Volkswagen has 37 secure storage facilities around the US housing nearly 300,000 vehicles, the filing from the program’s independent administrator said. The lots include a shuttered suburban Detroit football stadium, a former Minnesota paper mill and a desert site near Victorville, California.
VW spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said in a statement the storage facility in Victorville, California, is one of many “to ensure the responsible storage of vehicles that are bought back” under the terms of the Volkswagen diesel settlements.
“These vehicles are being stored on an interim basis and routinely maintained in a manner to ensure their long-term operability and quality, so that they may be returned to commerce or exported once US regulators approve appropriate emissions modifications,” she said.

What a job that must be in a place like in the picture above.
Mechanic's heaven or hell?
I feel like it's easier to just part them at this point?
Probably betting on Trump easing the restrictions and letting them sell them in the US again.
It's sad but expected that companies are preparing to go back on a moments notice to harmful technologies to maintain a profit margin due to an businessman first president.
Who would want the parts though?
I don't know how agnostic the parts on a Diesel engine are but I'm sure stuff like the underlying framework, computer parts, chassis, wheels, suspension frames etc etc etc etc would be useful for anyone interested in that stuff.
There's an old shut down Bluebird School bus factory down the street from me that is completely full of VW diesels. I was definitely surprised considering the tiny spec of a town I live in.
Can I just... Have one?
Please?
hmm, based on their past performance they will probably just burn them all in one mega orgy of emissions
i wonder how well they keep in the different conditions, i'd expect the paint from the desert ones to be a little windblown
So much wasted material..why not just sell these at a discount?
What's worse? The pollution from these cars......
Or all the time, energy, money and resources that went into the design, production and recollection of these cars?
Don't get me wrong, what the did is wrong. But ehhhhhhhhhh
Considering diesels actively kill people by being in operation, and these things exceed the legal limit by several multiples of ten. It's certainly better that they are just sitting here.
Converting the engines to run on gasoline wouldn't be hard either, so in the end you'd just have to scrap the transmissions' gears because of the different torque outputs. You could even easily make hybrids out of them without tossing away anything major.
But noooo, instead they're just letting them sit in a field and hope they can lobby hard enough for diesel-powered city cars.
Convert them to houses now that people on the US are allowed to have a residence in a car
Probably just tedious mothballing stuff, it's not like these cars are rolling around anywhere
While true, it may still be technically better for people to have these cars since many people drive ancient used shit with potentially even worse emissions.
Although their statement in the OP is pretty vague, some people are saying that it means they're waiting for Trump to just let them release them again, but a charitable interpretation says that they actually have proposed modifications and are waiting for approval.
You still gotta make sure they're lubricated/oiled, lest you allow rust to set in, as well as make sure the gaskets are intact and aren't leaking anything, if there's anything in there to begin with.
If the parts still work, why wouldn't shops suppliers want them?
Lol they can rot in those lots on Volkswagen's dime for all I care, they knowingly lied to and bullied multiple private and government agencies just so they could raise their stock value. You don't reward that by allowing them to freely resell those cars as is, otherwise you're just condoning their behavior and sending a message that this kind of thing is okay.
Because hybrids totally aren't harmful and depleted lithium batteries don't pollute the environment right?
This thread isn't really an EV circle jerk, even petrol cars are better than these. Lithium batteries get recycled.
Just going out and replacing a functional car with a Prius is a net negative for the environment
but replacing an aged car with one is a net positive.
or you could do what you're doing and ignore context and reality.
Rated by accident
Anyway, if no one drives them, why would anyone want parts for them?
for fuck sakes at least dismantle the cars and recycle the materials.
