This will massively slow down already extreme processing times.
We really need to ask ourselves if this is really effective and is it really legally justified.
Technically speaking within the US employeeers, have the right to look at your social media like twitter,insta-gram and Facebook to see if hiring you is a good decision. To be fair I wouldn't hire or allow anyone into the country if I know they post a lot of support for Syrian fighters or questionable content like praising Hamas.
But what about being critical of the US Government? Is that a cause of denying their visa?
And honestly, employers having that right is pretty fucked up.
That's the point.
It's not like I'd be interested in working there given the current conjuncture, especially when there are many more interesting alternatives that don't involve forfeiting your rights.
Technically, employers could decide to not hire you just because you fave'd "Nickelback", they're not required to tell you why you weren't hired.
Was referencing the part about supporting Hamas, which is grounds to be suspicious of the person. What are the guidelines for denying their visa? That they're brown?
Might as well just go the full mile and establish a social credit system like China has. It's obvious they want something like that without explicitly saying so.
Could be possible, but it would depend on the context.
To a degree, but not entirely. They're not going to hire someone to a law firm if they know they post tons of gangster life style stuff, videos with people dying or gore, posting racist, inflammatory comments and so forth on twitter and facebook. Then they have every right not hire you because you'll make their law firm look bad. Compared to someone who just posted a funny picture of Tom Brady not catching a football and the people who didn't hire him is a Pats fan does it solely because that reason.
You're probably fine then? They're still going to screen you and see if you family or friends use social media.
Actualyl they'll probably deny you on the grounds of 'We can't verify your history so we don't know if you're a good fit for the country'. Already see it in asshole private employers that snoop into people's personal lives...
Heh. Honestly surprised I haven't had any issues due to not being on Facebook yet.
I try not to post anything remotely controversial on social media but this is still a bit unsettling. You never know how someone might interpret a silly joke in the comment section of a meme page
If I could be turned away because I called Trump voters "Cheeto Cheerleaders" so be it
I dunno if this is particularly new, you could always be weeded out like that during the interviews and tests.
At-Will employment goes both ways though, I've quit several jobs without notice because the employer lied/left out important job details in interviews.
Most people don't have the luxury of doing that, though. Your average person needs a paycheck far more than an employer needs to fill any particular position - and when that employer does post an opening, they enjoy an endless selection of (often desperate) people flooding in to apply, whereas those prospective workers count themselves lucky to get a response from one job, let alone being given a choice. Most people will hang onto their job like a quite-literal lifeline once they actually find one.
And if a worker actually does exercise their at-will rights and quits a job without notice, it'll severely hinder future employers' desire to hire them over "reliability concerns" (whereas a douchebag boss can fire someone on a whim without consequence because they can find a replacement almost immediately). Any benefit of at-will employment is heavily weighted in favor of the employers. It far more often just makes us laypeople the bitch than it does give us any sort of leg up.
If you've still been able to find work after quitting a job without notice - no matter how justified you may have been - then the reality is that you've been very lucky.
How would it not be legal? Nobody has a right to immigrate to the United States.
Laws about how to treat humans should not only apply to people on your side of the border.
I'm not saying it's illegal, but it is immoral.
Gotta love the day and age where you maybe need to set-up faked social media accounts to cross a border or get a job.
Now even anyone who doesn't participate in this garbage looks suspicious.
Social media was a mistake.
Like I said, they could refuse to hire you for ANY reason, and they're not required to record or explain why.
Why do we insist on dehumanizing people from other countries? Just because someone crosses a border doesn't mean a problem is created. That problem already existed, it was just in a different country. If the government wants to collect the social media data of everyone before they let them in, why don't they collect all of our social media data, and kick us out if they find something wrong? I deserve to be scrutinized just as much as someone who's only crime is "trying to come to the United States legally".
Most gov't policies allow reasonable disagreements with the government.
There is a huge difference between discussing and disagreeing with the government and actively supporting or advocating fringe groups who may or may not want to attack the U.S.
are you acting like people don't have a right to privacy?
Maybe in low population areas or non-non-entry level jobs, but I've been employed for the last eight years and my time between searching for a job and getting a job is generally less than two weeks. I think many people do not posses good job-hunting skills or are unwilling to work in multiple fields.
That being said, I've mostly lived in places with a population of at least 90,000.
Schools should really teach students how to look for jobs.
Ah, the NeoGAF approach to employment.
The reason it takes so long to get verified for an account there (and probably ResetEra but I'm pretty they've expanded the process) is because a mod or some other staff member has to do a fairly deep online background check on you, which involves Googling up whatever they can find about you on forums, social media etc. to see if you're a 'good fit' for NeoGAF.
Almost like dehumanizing immigrants was this administration's promise. None of this would be happening under a different President.
