Where do I begin?
You can make an account here. Then choose a client.
The default "viewer" (term for SL clients) is good if you couldn't give half a shit about SL and just want to grief middle aged chain smokers that take themselves too seriously. You can get it here.
The most popular and versatile viewer is Firestorm. It's not perfect but it gives you a TON of control and customization options with the interface, along with a ton of quality of life macros built in and turned on by default. They even have a dedicated wiki if you want to learn how to do something. You can get it here.
If you're more interested in performance and minimalism, then look no further than Alchemy. It's relatively new, and its feature set is growing with every update but the dev team makes sure it doesn't overwhelm. You can grab it here.
Another viewer is Black Dragon. It's basically designed for the express purpose of being pretty. It has a ton of post processing effects and settings to tweak to make them. It's good for photos, gifs, webms, etc. You can grab it here.
Finally there's Lumiya, which is an Android client that supports 3D rendering among other typical desktop features. I would only suggest this as a complementary viewer for when you're not near your PC. You can grab it here. ($3 USD)
After you've made an account and chosen your viewer, explore! If you're experiencing performance issues the two most important graphics settings are shadows and render distance. Turn off shadows and lower render distance below 128 to get good FPS boost. SL is also highly dependent on your RAM (both speed and size) and your storage, you might get better performance on a PC with faster RAM, an SSD, and a modest GPU than a PC with modest RAM, a HDD, and a flagship GPU. It's also worth noting that SL is designed to have a minimum functional framerate of 22, so don't worry too much about performance.

completely flat normal map (#8080FF), completely flat specular map (#FFFFFF), but the normal map has photoshop's default cloud render on the alpha channel.
