Problem transfering/copying vertex normals to mask bodygroup seams

Hello, I have a problem with transfering custom normals from one object onto another. Here is a video of the problem:

As you can see, the normals do not get transfered properly from the main body to the 2 halves. This may be an issue because of the model being kinda high poly, but I still doubt that. I see no problem at why this should not work. Is there any way, either in Blender or 3DS Max, to copy the normals from the base model without them being fucked up like in the video. The 2 parts (and more) will be bodygroups that otherwise would have seams at the meeting points.
Get the new Blender SMD plugin version, it has built in custom normal transfering support automatically when importing now.
I do not have a problem with importing custom normals, also I am using DMX instead of SMD. My problem is I need to copythe vertex normals from one mesh to another one using the Data Transfer modifier, but it is failing to do so properly.
