By that metric all the southern states ought to be in jail They've been fucking up voting rights for over a century
throw texas down the well so my country can be free
rude
Hopefully something comes of this. I was tempted to vote absentee to Texas (even though I'm a Minnesota resident for college), but I changed my mind because of how much of a pain in the ass registering to vote was when I was first eligible. I didn't have my driver's license back then, just a permit, which doesn't count for voter registration. I had to show two documents showing proof of identity at the polls after going through two mail-in forms, due 30 days in advance of the elections, just to register to vote. I had to bring my original birth certificate (plus consular report of birth abroad) and my US passport as proof of identity, because my permit didn't count as proof of identity. Absolute pain in the ass. Basically unreasonably impossible if you don't have a driver's license - and considering that my driver's license took nine consecutive hours at the DMV and required proof of residency with last month's rent/utilities/property tax papers AND further proof of identity (again with the birth certificate and SSN)... it's fucked. Anyone in urban areas without a driver's license, anyone with inconsistent residency proof (homeless/poor), anyone without real written paperwork proof and the time/patience to plan out their voter registration over a month in advance - get fucked, don't vote. In Minnesota, I went to the polls, registered in less than five minutes, and voted. In and out in less than 10 minutes. No fucking birth certificates required. Didn't even have to show my driver's license or any other form of ID - just went, filled out a registration sheet, confirmed my name on the sheet, and cast my vote. Voter fraud's somehow a non-issue up here.
