Crusader Kings II on Steam Worth noting this is not a free weekend or similar. It's a free permanent copy of the game, as long as you grab it before 1900 CEST in two days Grab it while you can lads
Don't let the learning curve throw you off, many of the more complex features are either irrelevant right away or behind DLC. Go Ireland and you'll ease yourself in pretty fast. A few hours later and you'll be murdering your wife via snakes to marry that hot French princess and hiring the local maid to smother your baby son to death for being hunchback, all the while murdering some guy's entire family to inherit a tiny castle out in the middle of nowhere.
Holy shit yes, I've wanted this game for years and now I get it for free? Fuck yeah.
Just an FYI, if you play Ireland play 1066 or later. Do NOT play the 769 or 867 start dates unless you want a visit from very angry Norse men to give you a nice old sacking.. a few dozen times.
norse is objectively best religion in this game
Oh man, now I can finally contribute to ShitCrusaderKingsSay https://www.reddit.com/r/ShitCrusaderKingsSay/
powergaming wise yeah, I'm pretty sure most world conquest strats or atleast most "muscle through everything) strats start with taking most afflictions in ruler designer and being norse to conquer every neighbor
It also has an amazing amount of flavor events, the ability to raid built in, and reforming it literally makes you the pope of Norse giving you basically unlimited power. Norse content is up there with Christianity and Muslim content tbh.
the game's free but the fifty quadrillion dlc's are not
Did they do this intentionally or accidentally?
I'm pretty sure it was intentional. Mostly because the aforementioned DLC is still really expensive even at 50% off.

Is any of it worth it?
according to friends without the dlc ck2 might as well be nothing
Nothing like having a free giveaway on something that cannot function without dlc.
Old Gods and Way of Life are top tier. Sword of Islam, The Reaper's Due, Horse Lords are really awesome if you are into that kind of content. That's from the top of my head, but the ones which kinda suck are Charlemagne and the India one.
Yeah the trifecta of good, accessible content is probably Christian/PAgan/Muslim, as they're centralized in the western area and can generally do a lot and interact with most people. Pagan/Muslim each let you become the heads of some branches, giving a lot of power and respect, while Christianity allows you to vassalize different church heads, letting you wield powers like excommunication without risk. The other religions are okay, but don't have nearly as much content or accessibility from what I know, with india being it's own world basically and others being religions in the process of dying. Christianity is best for court politic stuff, declaring war is most difficult with them unless it's against an infidel, meaning you need to put more effort into powerplays with marriages, fealty and key parts of land for dejure claims. You constantly have to answer to SOME religious head, meaning you'll always be at risk of excommunication or having an invasion sanctioned against you. The exception is Orthodoxy, where each ruler picks a vassal patriarch, meaning a lot of the risks are gone but you also can only exercise religious influence within areas your patriarch influences, usually just your own kingdom. With all the restrictions and risks of neighbors forming coalitions, christianity is the game of playing it safe and manipulating titles to fall into your hands, using war as a last resort when you're prepared to deal with the consequences. Islam is good if you want control over your empire, and a mix of diplomacy and warefare. Open succession means you basically handpick your heir depending on which has the most titles. Muslims are still encouraged to group up to fend off christians, and large swaths of land generally require holy wars/ jihads to gain at once. But you do get more free cassus belli's than christians do, get to pick an heir with more precision, dont have to worry about female inheritance, and can become a religious leader. Muslims are all about exercising direct control over things and paying piety for a lot of stuff you'd otherwise be blocked from doing as a christian. Pagans (norse/tengri specifically) are all about war. Before reforming your empire will get angry if you aren't at war, you get CBs on everyone, can take entire kingdoms at once (once per lifetime against stronger foes), free events for troops, and a slow reformation system for moving your religion forward, generally as the head of it. However, Norse are the worst at empire management even after you reform. You're generally surrounded by people that hate you, and if you reform the religion you generally end up being the only norse nation left, meaning no real diplomacy. Before reformation, you get the worst options for succession, and in early enough starting dates get to play the joy that is tribal mechanics. Pagans are ultimately good at taking, but must extend serious effort to keep what they take, and their immense power comes at the cost of peaceful options.
ck2 without dlc is literally just crusading kings ck2 with dlc is crusader memes II v. ahura mazda demands that i fuck my horse sister-mother-wife so i can have more strong+genius ubermenchsen i think its worth it but im like fucking deep in the dlc already plus im a paradox whore anyway. 500 iq suggests u just try out base ck2 and if you like it then sell ur kids into slavery and get the fucking dlc, those kids had shit stats anyway
I still think the game is worth playing even without DLC and you can still have a lot of fun with it. The only problem is you'll eventually run out of different countries and features to experiment with, some that (arguably) should have been in the game to begin with. The base game still has a lot of content regardless and it will probably be a while before you find the need to buy any DLC.
I'll be the first to get on the "Fuck Paradoxs DLC practices" train but vanilla CK2 still has so much fucking content. Yeah, theres a good group of DLC(Old Gods, Way of Life, Reaper's Due, ect) that basically make the game extremely more fun, but thats what good DLC should do. Theres also a chunk of DLC that you can not touch with a 10 foot pole if youre not interested in what theyve got(Rajas, Charlemagne, Horse Lords, ect) and you really wont be able to tell that somethings missing. Is CK2 better with most of its DLC? Absolutely. Is is still worth playing without it? Absolutely.
Now if only the DLC were on sale for 0.00$ This is just strategy to drag more people into ck2 dlc pain train
It's cool guys, you can still buy the DLC for $141. Honestly the Paradox formula for DLC should just make base games free at this point. It's kind of absurd.
To think I was considering buying it not long ago, thank god I didn't.
I don’t know if it’s the demo is lacking but I have no idea what I’m doing in CK2 even with tutorials. Hope that having the full game lets me understand what I’m actually doing.
currently teaching 2 friends to play , wish me luck
With my 3667 hours of gameplay experience I suggest you get the game with atleast some of the DLC, in particular any that unlock new religions or government types like Old Gods, Sword of Islam, and Horse Lords; Rajas too if you wanna play in India.
This is definitely the best Game of Thrones game.
I bought this and some of the DLC just to play the Game of Thrones mod while I wait for the TWOW or Season 8
Sick, I've always wanted to play one of those Paradox map painting simulators but never got around to it
Make sure to get most DLCs on sale, don't buy them full price, sales usually give a very big price cut to all but the most recent single DLC. Tbh I think a pretty decent strategy would be to just stick old DLC in the base game. Perhaps only sell like the last 4-5. Ofc content packs/music would keep their cost as well. It'd still get them the majority of their money from the paradox faithful while keeping the game more approachable to new people. It doesn't matter that only a couple of the DLCs are "essential" while the rest are just nice, it's pretty intimidating to people.
