I got an Asus Crosshair VI Hero, Ryzen 1800x, and 8x2 TridentZ RAM. Both of my DIMM_B slots are not working properly.
If I have DIMMs A2 and B2 populated the BIOS will show only 8gb and windows will use 8gb but will say that 16 is installed with 8 being “reserved for hardware”.
I know both RAM sticks work individually in DIMM_A2 and together in DIMM_A1 + A2.
I’ve been running with A1+A2 for 2 days before, upon booting, the LEDs in A1 froze. No updating of AURA or rebooting fixed it. As of right now it is back after reseating the CPU a 2nd time.
So far, I have tried the following, checking the RAM detected after each step:
I reseated the CPU, loaded default BIOS settings, cleared CMOS, flashed BIOS version 3502 (01/30), reseated the CPU again.
At no point did anything change.
I’m guessing I just got a faulty board, any ideas on this before I RMA the thing?
Definitely sounds like the board to me, strange shit like this typically happens if it has an issue communicating with the CPU. I'd suggest checking the pinholes on the board to make sure there isn't any shit in there, and just make sure all the pins are straight on the CPU.
I checked the CPU and pinholes the times I reseated it. I saw no obstructions or bent pins. I took some pictures if anyone cares to look.
Sounds to me like perhaps it's just your ram slots. Can you populate the other two dual channel slots? Usually dual channel boards have 4 slots.
Yeah, A1+A2 work just fine but the LEDs in A1 stop working. I'm going to wind up RMAing the thing. Everything leads back to the board being the problem.
Sounds like you've done everything possible with the stuff you have. Time to RMA the board I reckon
Update: Got the board back from RMA
Problem / Sumptom: Test ok
Action: Connot duplicate the symptom, and update Software/Firmware/ BIOS
They didn't even send it back in the motherboard box I sent it in.
I've been thinking about this problem and I'd like an opinion on it. Could it be my power supply going bad? One of the main reasons behind my upgrade was that my current system suddenly started blue screening with an OC I was running for a while. Then a lower OC went from stable to being unable to boot. The same went with just the XMP profile, have to run my setup with just stock speeds.
I thought this problem was my CPU starting to die on me after the use but now with these new problems I'm thinking maybe I should get a new power supply?
It's also worth noting that I have a 1000w supply as it was meant to run SLI back when I first built my system.
If you can get your hands on one that can run your system, its worth a shot, especially if the PSU is quite old. Bad power on the 12v rail going direct to the CPU could cause strange things to happen like that. Unlikely but still a possibility is a bad CPU since Ryzen has the memory controller integrated into the CPU itself.
Might just buy one soon. Will be needing a new one for when I transfer my current setup to another case anyway.
Update 2: Got in and installed the new PSU, 750 Watt Seasonic. Problem still persists, same as before.
Next up is to RMA the CPU I suppose.
I had a very similar issue. I bought all my parts over a month and when I went to put it together, I noticed the motherboard had a pin that was slightly off. I ignored it but I had the same exact RAM issues you had. I reached out to Asus RMA and they said it was my fault before I even had a chance to send the board back. Needless to say, I'm done with Asus.
From what I've heard, Asus's RMA department isn't too great.
I've been trying to mull over what other possibilities it could be before I take the system back apart and ship out the CPU. I got the RAM QVL list here and I did notice that my RAM ( G.Skill F4-3200C14D-16GTZR ) isn't on there but neither is any TridentZ brand G.Skill which is almost always the kind you see people using in their Ryzen builds with the Crosshair 6.

But even if that was the problem, would the RAM really only work in the DIMM A slots and neither of the B slots? It's certainly a Dual-channel kit too.
I even tried setting the DOCP while the sticks were in A2 and B2 but every time my computer boots with a stick in either B slots it will give me a screen saying that RAM settings were reset due to failure to boot. Even with default settings, which I hadn't mentioned previously.
DOCP can get the sticks going at 3200 while in A1 + A2 though.
Is your BIOS up to date?
Bit of an update here. I got a new Ryzen CPU for a server build I'm looking to do. Slapped it into my current build to troubleshoot this issue and yup, DIMMs seem to be working. DIMM A2 + B2 booted and detected all RAM.
Side note:
I had mentioned the problem to a co-worker and he told me that 1800x's have apparently had memory controller issues.
Could've been that or a bios issue that still hadn't been fixed yet for that model. But I know that one of the pins on my 1800x got buggered and ended up snapping off and that prevented half of my ram from working and it showed the same symptom as you, with half of it listed as reserved. Looking at the chip you would've never noticed the bad pin either without going at it with a magnifying glass as it was one of the very corner pins. Are you double sure that the same isn't the case for you?
Very sure it isn't a BIOS issue as it's the same board used by a ton of reviwers when they first looked at the 1800x. I'd also like to assume ASUS was competent enough in their RMA check to use an 1800x themselves.
As for the pins I've checked a bunch of times, even took a few pics with my phone so I could see a more blown up image, all looks fine.
What is hopefully my last update on this whole thing is that I RMA'd the 1800x. AMD sent me a new 1800x and were even kind enough to pay for the shipping of my old one. It's in without a hitch, RAM all detected as it should be. I can finally watch videos and grind in Destiny 2 again.
Did you ever try turning it off and on, though?
