I cannot find any particular news source on this, besides Nightdive Studios' own discord message, so I will simply relay the information here. NightDive Studios is preparing to release a big information update on the remake of System Shock 1. For those of you who are unaware, the kickstarter-funded remake hit a significant hurdle when the team decided to halt development and start anew after straying too far from the intended goal of the project. To hype people up for the update, they have also released the source code for the Powermac version of System Shock, available on github. https://github.com/NightDiveStudios/shockmac Thought it was a cool little thing I saw pop up in NDS' discord announcements. Supposedly, the source code for other versions of the game will come out soon, possibly at the same time as the info update itself.
OOF, PowerMac code. Time to bring out the ol' G4 https://i.imgur.com/dHUf7af.png
Got some funky newline issues going on with that code. Everything on github is a single line.
Hopefully when all the sources are available, we'll get a nice sourceport and mods. I liked System Shock 1, but it just handles so wonky that I can't play it again.
Hopefully there's some good news with this.
Holy shit that's awesome maybe we can use the "higher quality" assets that the MAC port had with the remaster.
Nice. When they announced they were stopping because they were essentially making a new game with System Shock 2 elements I thought they'd just abandon the project. They've already sunk a lot of money and time into it, it must have been hard to start over.
Thats not a glitch, thats just how they did it back in the '94. They didnt call them "Looking glass technologies" over nothing.
I imagine that after starting over they still kept most of the assets so it wasn't really starting completely over again.
They’ve since recommended people use the StuffIt archive download I should also mention that this is the OS 9 version so rev up those system folders and forget about memory protection
Can't wait until i can play System Shock in 4K.
The update on the remake is now live: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598858095/system-shock/posts/2135868 TL;DR rundown: Development is going back to what the demo presented to promote the Kickstarter campaign, but with an engine change to Unreal Engine. The initial design shift was brought up by a promise in extra funding which never came to fruition, forcing them to reconsider their decision. Most of the work done thus has been successfully reused and thus relatively little was lost in the direction readjustment. Release is likely to slip past 2019, but there should be a testable version for the highest tier backers by September 2018. A revamped version of Enhanced Edition is planned, using the available source code which was released.
Is this the one with the animations made by the annoying french man?
He hasn't worked on it in quite some time AFAIK. He left the team.
The annoying French man was let go early in development.
Yeah, he posted about it when they released the concept demo. I still regret not getting on to him about some of the animations. The animations where you pick up your initial gear should be investigative, like you're checking outthe details, but in the demo way back when the character just kind of twisted them about like "What the fuck is this?" You play as someone who should know what the shit you're plugging into your head is, at least broadly.
Isn’t he around here somewhere? Saw him posting right after the move.
I think he packed up his baguette and surrendered.
I'm kinda disappointed, what they said they were going to do in November(?) sounded really cool. I hope they still do decide to make each area and corridor distinct in some way.
I am very happy with this. I liked the demo approach way more then some of the stuff they showed lately before the cancel, and I think it better reflects what was promised too. Huge kudos to whatever project manager had the balls to make the decision to roll back, it couldnt have been easy and in this case (especially with the funding thing) was definitely the right call to make.
Hope the remake keeps the dismemberment tech they were working on. I don't like it when I kill an enemy in a game and they just flop over.
