I don't like exhaust if it impedes conversation inside the car in any way, except at WOT where it makes sense to be loud. But if you're just driving around and it's like BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I hate it.
One of my favorite exhausts is this one:

I like my exhaust to be an asian man farting down the streets at extremely high speeds
I used to love to hear my exhaust, but now, I love the sound of my turbos spooling.
I believe in a principle I like to call "respectful straight piping". No excessive drone around town or obnoxiously high decibels as not to piss off the neighbors while still keeping high flow and a sweet sweet WOT sound. Not too throaty or whiny though as it feels too artificial.
Moderate when you tromp on it, almost silent on the freeway. All about tone, not volume.
I want it to be damn near silent in the cabin if I'm just bumbling around at normal speeds and roar if I actually put the hammer down.
Ive got glass packs on my vic and thats about right.
Im considering sticking a glasspack on the eagle for some str8 6 rip roarin
My grandfather had glass packs for the Malibu, but I don't know if he still had them when we boxed everything up. I'd love to stick them on just once to experience it
One thing I do love about modern cars is like, their active exhaust systems. Having a way to open them up to be loud when you want them to, or quiet when you're hungover on the way to work the next morning is pretty darn cool, I think.
Except when the loud part is literally just a wheel well speaker (COUGH volkswagen autogroup COUGH)

Somewhere between illegal and earth shattering tbh
My Eclipse was pretty decent. Shorty headers, high-flow cat, and an injen muffler. Just loud enough to make a statement but not rice enough to burst everyone's eardrums in a 10 mile radius.
Quiet at all times. Loud exhausts are just attention seeking and childish. Although it’s ironic that I say that, because I’ve been driving a Peugeot 205 over the past few days and it doesn’t even have a muffler
Loud enough to wake up the neighborhood when you start the car in the morning before going to work.

Depends on the engine, but in general I don't like super loud exhausts on road-going vehicles. My Legacy GT's ageing stock exhaust system is actually just fine for me. It has enough of that UEL header rumble going on, and it lets out some deeper growls while downshifting.
My favorite exhaust note will always be the Boss Mustangs:

As long as it complements the engine note and it changes tone throughout the range it's all good.
Too many ricers/chavs in the UK just stick a stupidly massive exhaust on their shitey 1.2L hot hatch so it's just a really loud drone no matter what RPM or load the engine is under. Small car syndrome.

2 of my cars, mustang is catback, lexus is real straight pipe (no cats)
the mustang is actually pretty quiet once the idle settles down and around town. the lexus is admittedly too loud but i dont care enough about it to spend money to make it quieter cause drift car.
Plenty of Honda's have loud exhausts (they all sound like shit). I'm more concerned with the fact that it's a loud exhaust on a fucking hybrid...
So, this is my daily. I think it's too loud.

And this is my GF daily, my much faster PT Cruiser. It's too quiet.

So somewhere in between would be good for me. the Neon isn't as loud as evilweazel's post.
