some concepts, up for claiming!!!
Well this was a surprise to stumble across on Google. I guess now's as good a time as any to finally make a Facepunch account and introduce myself. I go by Zuko on Steam. I'm the designer of the Chemist class and leader of the Chemist Mod project.
A lot of time and thought has gone into designing him. I think it's been 4 or 5 years now since I first conceived of the idea, and about 2 years since I brought the idea up on the Steam forums and ended up forming a team on there of people who really liked the ideas that I had. It's been nothing but planning and balancing ever since.
We don't yet have anything working in game, as we've yet to get ahold of anyone who could actually make him a functional class in the game. We hope to have him implemented without having to replace anything, but are open to if it's how it has to be.
If anyone around here knows someone who would be interested and capable of making this project finally happen, make sure to send them our way. We've got a group here:
Steam Community
And if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I'll start by getting a common misconception out of the way. No, I'm not a weeb. I have seen a small handful of like 5 different anime, but I don't think that qualifies. I made him Japanese simply because I thought it would be amusing to have a cruddy Japanese stereotype in TF2's already stereotype littered cast.
Also, those are some dank cosmetic designs. I rike arot. If this mod ever pulls through I might even implement some of those.
Well my modeler just finished putting together a final model of the character scene in the Million Dollar Mann poster. You can probably tell we used Medic as a base. Now I've got most of what I need to make the full short for the Chemist's backstory. That should be launching this summer and the model will be released alongside it.
Meet Mr. Brown.

hypotelorism man
I can't believe Medic is Keanu Reaves.
That was actually intentional. A request I made to the modeler. He's also a bit cross-eyed. We designed him to be this eccentric Englishman. He's got a very friendly, charming personality to him, but I wanted there to be something a little off about him. Like he's not completely off the wall insane, but he still has just a few screws loose.
He was actually the very first design I had for the Chemist, but he was scrapped for the bald, grumpy Japanese man because he would have been confused with Medic. We liked the character though and worked him into the Chemist's story. If the mod ever picks up enough that we could do what TF2C did and have a standalone game, we hope to have Mr. Brown design new items for the mod that you could maybe earn by doing contracts with him.
Your animation is very stiff, but, especially in that The Concoction video, you very clearly know how to write a good script, frame a good scene, use visual humor, and tell a funny short story very well. That goes a lot farther than it seems. Keep it up, man.
The 3 Chemist shorts I put out are actually the only experience I have in 3D animation, hence the jank. I do have 10 years of 2D animation experience, but this 3D stuff is definitely a very different challenge. I try to work around my inexperience by making everything move like a stopmotion film. It's very stiff and robotic, but I personally don't see it as unpleasant to look at. I really enjoy looking over the fight scene in The Concoction. That's definitely the one I'm most proud of out of the 3.
So as one can probably tell just by looking at our Chemist model, we're not super experienced in model making. Unfortunately we're running into some issues porting Mr. Brown into SFM.

I imagine this has something to do with the fact that we used the Medic as a base. We notice that a lot of changes we made to his face are practically undone, like his jaw underneath the beard is shaped like Medic's jaw, despite being molded in a completely different shape. And under his hair his head went from being smooth and round to being shaped like Medic's hair.
I imagine it's something to do with the skeleton. Whatever the issue may be, if anyone knows an easy fix for this that doesn't involve having to redo anything major, it would be a huge help.
