I just preferred the way it was designed at the time. You had 4 characters before they were split into 8, and they were not random drops or level based. You unlocked them by upgrading your base, which you also unlocked your abilities, which meant neither ever became obsolete. Weapons and traps were the only items level based, which is fine since you have a decent character to fall back on even if your best weapons expire. Now characters are split into 8 classes and rely on card drops to obtain, which means I am not guaranteed the character I want at a level that is worthwhile.
