As it stands now, I think most here will agree that the subsections are the antithesis of user-friendly. If the goal of the new forums is to facilitate entry for newcomers, then something should be done about the intrinsically confusing way the subsections are handled, and several steps should be taken to make them less hostile.
Thus I'm offering the list of changes which I think would benefit the forum on virtue of clarifying and improving the overall looks as well as navigation of the subsections:
Remove (or add the option to hide) child section threads from the parent section. Right now it is difficult to navigate misc threads which do not fit under other subsections since they are squeezed inbetween threads which do have their own subsections. The fact subsections exist at all is ultimately redundant if the content in them is not discriminated to this section.
Allow the most popular thread of each subsection to be reported to the parent section to give an incentive to visit the child subsection without drowning the parent section with too many threads.
Make the subsections about Genres and/or Publishers, rather than about specific IPs :
Merge all valve IP subsections into the Valve Games Subsection
Merge PUBG and Fortnite into Online Games
Rename Far Cry to Ubisoft
Rename Overwatch to Blizzard
Rename Mario to Nintendo
Create more subsections related to specific genres and/or publishers, for instance:
A Bethesda subsection for TES and Fallout
A (Retro) FPS subsection since there is a general solely dedicated to this which could actually use the broader space
Add more post icons per subsection. This way, different IPs in a single subsection can still easily be identified since most of them have well known, easily distinguishable logos. It would also look pretty fly.
Make the subsections directly accessible from inside of the game section, once again using images for clarity's sake. I've added a quick photoshop to show how this could be done.

That's all. I think these changes would allow the userbase of the forum to benefit from and thrive in the new subsections without making them feel hostile or claustrophobic and would improve the chances of Facepunch being welcoming and attracting newcomers to the community.
