• The fusion of FPWiki into the forums

Garry's roadmap states for a wiki to come into existence in the near future Seeing as we already have a wiki, why not fuse the two together. As an admin of the wiki (not the creator, that's @smurfy ) it seems almost logical to integrate these two together to create a cohesive system where users can edit and publish wikis of important events. I don't know how much work this would take, but seeing as I have seen this done in some capacity, I wonder if its possible. Anyway would you like to see a fusion happen? Or should we remain separate forever
Integration would be cool, or maybe at least a link to it on the navigation bar: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/553/f17a3bdd-96f2-4df4-84ae-00d107a42d17/chrome_2018-04-06_23-06-26.png I don't think many people use the wiki, if they're aware of it at all. People might contribute/update it more if it was more visible.
I wiki for each of facepunch's project might also be deemed quite useful, especially if it's got that community contribution People who contribute regularly (with good changes) could also be rewarded (as they are with rust ban reports)
I think awarding coins for contribution is a good incentive On that note, I have put this thread on the front page. I encourage readers and contributors to voice their support or opposition https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/171/fcddf68f-5e5d-4814-9837-8ff79ae7ce3a/Screen Shot 2018-04-09 at 2.19.46 am.png
MediaWiki's a dinosaur, it would be great to have a more accessible system. Seems like Garry has a long way to go yet before getting on to any wiki stuff though. In the end any fusion might just come down to porting the decent articles over to the new system when it launches
Integrating the Wiki would likely increase contribution to it heavily, and I'm all for that! And having a Wiki for each project would be quite useful too, especially if paired with pages that explain things that may not be as obvious to newcomers (and, if sourced from the forum, credited to those who originally wrote the guide/list/post). But there is a reason why it's on the "Then" side of the roadmap - not really something that should be urgently done. Something that would be cool though is if a link to the Wiki was put in the top right, ala what northshore mocked up above.
the sense i get is garry doesn't mean a wiki for facepunch the forums, he means an integrated wiki system for the games
It looks like the forum is technically a game in his system, since it has the same roadmap and commit log etc, so making a wiki function for games would automatically make a wiki for the forum.
Let's hope it doesn't increase vandalism or 'phone book syndrome' A problem on Wikipunch was thaty users joined and made a wiki page about themselves, as to say "I exist guys look at me" - They're not really useful to anyone. The Wiki is about what users have done to these forums, like that time you got away with posting a highly illegal wok, not some user directory.
I will go through and delete pages of users who have no significance
Quite a few of them have significance, but nobody's gone and filled in the details e.g. LORD M slowly going mad and eventually getting perma'd for racism. Used to make some pretty cool Gmod maps back in the day, like Bahamut.
mediawiki generates pages for all users, it's just the users who do nothing else but that on fpwiki aren't that great. Other than that, it was posted about that users were free to have pages created for them one or two times in forums discussion. I remember if fondly, I made the page for TrannyAlert upon request, It might have been around the time we created a page for freddiew, since someone asked for that too
Gonna be honest, I don't like FP Wiki at all. Writing down an official list of inside jokes is masturbatory as fuck. It fuels circlejerking/hugboxing, cults of personality, and forced jokes as everyone's looking for the next "FP moment" to say they were a part of it. If it's off the site, I don't care, but integrating all that into Facepunch is stupid.
Agreed with most of this. Documentation and archiving seems to be up peoples alley in some cases. I personally don't browse through the wiki, my responsibilities on it are to make sure vandalism doesn't occur. I think though its a matter of opinion, tho you would be in the majority who believe that Users like LORD M wouldn't be removed, I'm talking newbie blues who make a page about themselves. Not useful at all and will be culled. If you want, you should add information you know to it and help out if possible. I do understand if you've got a lack of motivation to do so, maybe someone else can idk.
Yeah, the Facepunch Wiki isn't that special I personally thought it would be like the Garry's Mod Wiki, but for all the Facepunch's games and history or something
If it's geared towards being informative, then yeah, it would be tremendous. List projects, versions, guides and *some* of the forum's history, and it'd be a really neat resource that I think everyone would be on board with. Expand from that if it feels warranted, but that "base" is something I'd totally love to see
