I forgot about this one. Blame! (Manga)
Kingdom (Manga) my absolute fav
Molester Man (Manga) Onani Master Kurosawa (Manga) Don't let the names fool you, these are both good somewhat realistic dramas, Molester Man leaning more light-hearted and Onani Master Kurosawa being a bit more dramatic. Awesome stories that can be read in one night. https://mangadex.org/manga/2334/oyasumi-punpun Oyasumi Punpun is the ultimate in suffering (that isn't a doujin *cough* Emergence *cough*). Top-tier characters around an awfully depressing story turns out to be one hell of a ride; I feed off the despair though so this probably isn't for everyone.
Time to recommend some shit nobody else will Shingetsutan Tsukihime, The Breaker, Murasakiiro no Qualia, Medaka Box, Junk: Record of the Last Hero, Feng Shen Ji, Dominion, Melty Blood, Zerozaki Soushiki no Ningen Shiken, Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta. Ichinen ni Tsuki, Ichimanen de., Taiyou no Ie, ib: Instant Bullet, Shi ga Futari wo Wakatsu made, Silent Möbius
Ultra Heaven (Manga) My favourite. No other manga has drawn me in like this one. Marie no Kanaderu Ongaku (Manga) An incredible piece of science fiction. Kokou no Hito (Manga) Incredible artwork and psychological storytelling. Alice in Borderland (Manga) Tons of mindbending fun. Zetman (Manga) A great dark take on the superhero/sentai genre. Panorama Toukitan (Manga) My favourite Suehiro Maruo work. Shibito no Koe wo Kiku ga Yoi (Manga) My favourite new horror manga. Creative horror with some comedy and likeable characters. Hyouryuu Kyoushitsu (Manga) Classic horror manga. Twisted as fuck. Otome Sensou (Manga) An extremely dark story about a medieval peasant army. Parasyte (Manga) Another classic. One of the first manga I read, there was a thread about it here years ago. Fuan no Tane (Manga) Very short horror stories with tons of surreal imagery. Sumire 16 Genuinely hilarious.
Ookami Shounen wa Kyou mo Uso o Kasaneru (Manga) Boy cross-dresses to help girl he loves overcome fear of boys. The Voynich Hotel (Manga) Already mentioned before but it's a great manga about supernatural bantz inside of a hotel.
You were right, I was doing a disservice. Cute botan doing cute things warms up the heart I should pick more reccs from here, some of them are shorter than I thought
Grand Blue
Kuro (Manga) Kuro is an incredibly cute, but still horrific manga about a village, a small orphan and her cat. Think lovecraft, but in gorgeous pastel colors and with adorable art. Did I mention it's full color? It's an absolute joy to read.
GunSmith Cats Opus (Satoshi Kon's Opus) Akira
Surprised this isn't here yet but probably because it's so popular! WataMote! Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! (Manga) and also another favorite of mine, it even has a timeskip sequel to check out even though it's still ongoing. Karakai Jouzu no Takagi And I also enjoyed this one too even if it can be a bit slow. Tonari no Kaibutsu
Pretty much anything by Osamu Tezuka, but specifically my favorites are: W3 (Manga) Alabaster (Manga) Black Jack (Manga) MW Melody of Iron The only one on Mangadex is Alabaster.
Pandemonium A story about misunderstanding, desperation, and acceptance. And furries, I guess. You don't have to be a furry to like it, though. I'm not. 12 chapters. Sekai Oni An edgetastic comedy horror that takes a generic horror trope and flips it on its head. You'll either love it or hate it. About 100 chapters. Daidai wa, Hantoumei ni Nidone Suru Surreal. I can't really describe it. First chapter has a girl carrying around a talking severed head. The single best page in the manga. 15 chapters. Akumu no Elevator You ever get stuck in an elevator? With criminals? A oneshot, so it's short. Saike Mata Shite Mo A boy gets the power to go back in time one day, and has to deal with people with weird powers. He does not wuss around. Ongoing, 60+ chapters. Sugar Apple Fairy Tale (batoto) A story about a girl who wants to be a confectionist, and uses the help of fairies. Surprisingly serious despite the name and premise. 10 chapters, basically an ad for the light novel series, but still worth a read.
Girls' Last Tour (Manga) - Post-Apocalyptic potatoes! Very cute and atmospheric. The drawing is a little rough, but I feel like it adds to the charm of it. There's an anime too which I'm sure most of you have seen that I would also heavily recommend! Hidamari Sketch (Manga) - Probably recommended already but this is an awesome and super cute manga. If you like manga that will cheer you up then this is definitely one that you'll like. The anime adaptation is also highly recommended.
I'm surprised nobody has recommended anything by Junji Itou yet. Black Paradox and Hellstar Remina are both quite interesting and all his Tomie stories are good. They're spread out between a lot of one-shot anthologies though. (Itou Junji Kyoufu Collection is the only English one I can currently find but there's a compilation volume literally just labelled "Tomie" around somewhere.)
Hellstar Remina is the best comedy Junji Ito has ever written. It's so hilariously over the top, even before it gets to the heroic homeless guy, the gigantic cult dedicated to killing a girl for no reason other than she and the titular Hellstar have the same name, and the earth spinning so fast that gravity is reduced and the main character and thousands of people all leap into the air and literally jump around the entire world in a single bound, which hundreds of other people join the hoard mid-flight in a gigantic effort to kill one person. You look at this shit and tell me that this is a serious horror story intended to create dread in the reader. I spent the majority of that story laughing my ass off.
Made In Abyss - If you liked the Anime then you really should read the manga as well, there is quite a bit of material not covered by the Anime and IMO it gets even better. Also Uzumaki by my main man Junji Ito.
Yeah, if you take it as conventional horror then you're right. It gets pretty ridiculous. That doesn't mean it's not interesting though. Although the ending itself pretty dark and hopeless which is definitely conventional horror.
Inio Asano hype train! Solanin (Manga) Nijigahara Holograph (Manga) Oyasumi Punpun (Manga) Common theme: Depression, Relationships and Love.
Rokudou no Onna. Harem comedy about a bullied group of high school kids by all of the schools' delinquents. Our main character Rokudou gets a present from his grandfather that is a charm that in ancient times was used to ward off demons. When he uses it, he gets a hexagon on his foreheard and now the delinquent girls in his school are falling for him, including the mother of all bad girls Ranna! Manga is meant to be very silly and surreal with it's humor, like that rom-com with the guy and the dumb vampire. The power Rokudou has gets more detailed as the manga goes on so it has a set of rules so that Rokuduo isn't OP. Best girl IMHO is Tomboy who dresses like a boy along with a twin brother who dresses like a girl. The former gets a decent romantic connection with Rokuduo and even confesses with a kiss!
