I think the refugee camp should come back.
The main arguments I have for it are:
it provides banned users with opportunity for self-improvement.
bans as warnings is not a good idea when there aren't clearly defined rules on this site yet so banned users have no other way of getting educated on why what they did was bad
it has the potential to be entertaining
nice gold member perk
I hear a lot about how it's been settled that it's gone forever but I don't really understand why. Can we have a discussion about it?
Yeah i would like to have it back personally. It gave a convenient way to have a 1 on 1 talk with the banned user so that they could understand what they did wrong, that they shouldn't do it anymore, and subsequently the ban could be undone early. The good thing at least is we're a lot more lenient on bans now, but even so, it's always nice to give people a super convenient way they can ask for a second chance. Right now they're stuck having to go through discord or some shit.
RC was great for publically embarrassing total idiots
I wouldn't really be surprised if some form of it came back but wasn't viewable by golds, because people trying to throw a spectacle for the people watching probably isn't ideal from a moderation standpoint (and is probably why ratings were removed.)
Although I really miss it and would prefer it if it came back in its original form. I have no doubt that we'll eventually get something because "Just @ some dude on discord" is silly af.
Add an equivalent of Reddit's moderator mail Reddit has in which a user can private message all moderators
The forum should definitely have a built in appeals system, you shouldn't need to contact a mod through third party tools if you feel you were banned unfairly or don't know what you did wrong. Whether it should be viewable for golds is more questionable since it might have encouraged people to shitpost instead of appealing.
Both RC and DDT need to come back.
garry's foursquare against a return of DDT. makes browsing sections with a lot of deleted threads quite hellish.
isn't the whole point of DDT to store closed threads?
Pretty much. Not sure why he's against it.
With the way he's been talking about the new forums, maybe he just hates it because it's old, and old mean bad to him.
RC was a both bread and circuses
The refugee camp was great for watching people dig themselves a deeper grave for no reason. Always a laugh to see someones 1 day ban get extended to 1 month because they are incapable of accepting the reason they got banned.
I know Garry is trying to move away from the old FP forum, but I think Refugee camp was pretty unique. It gave members the chance to communicate with the mod team regarding their ban and hopefully learn from their mistakes and redeem themselves. I know we have discord, but I think using a third system is a downgrade.
I'd honestly prefer if bans were more common, though that might be just me thinking back of pre-2009 days. A day ban is not a disaster, in the end it's just a forum. And if someone goes apeshit over a 1 day ban that turns out to be justified, then it's a good show of character. Granted that puts more pressure and work on the mods to police around the forums, so it's not exactly the most optimal thing. Though maybe people are also more reasonable these days. I don't know.
Facepunch used to have this YOU ARE GOING TO BE BANNED in red on yellow aura (well, more than just an aura), and I think it's one of the things that made people stick around. Obviously Garry's mod is still massive, but Facepunch hasn't been primarily a Gmod forum for quite a long while.
It used to be called "Poor man's SomethingAwful". And I planned to venture to SomethingAwful at some point to at least take a look, but I never did. In 2 weeks it'll be 13 years since I came and never left. Facepunch had and still has that something that pulls me back.
Probably since DDT was basically "let's take topics that used to be organised into containers and put them all into 2 unorganised container". And if a subforum ends up being mostly closed threads, then that subforum probably shouldn't exist in the first place.
DDT was to show you what your thread shouldn't look like tbh
Honestly, I've learned more about the rules and how not to post from reading through shit in the RC then I have from receiving bans myself. If the mods find it convenient, then I don't see a logical reason for it not to return.
Refugee camp is good place for self-reflection.
Reading RC is the perfect way to get out of them as well
As it stands, the only way to appeal is publicly in front of a bunch of users, including several that doggedly brown-nose moderation team decisions. That's an overly toxic environment to have to appeal in, as well as being inconvenient since you can't even guarantee that moderator will see it (let alone the one that banned you)
I have brought this back on a temporary basis on Discord. You can connect using the link in the top right hand side of the forum, or directly by clicking below

signing up for another service just for support is pain/ the big 100 emoji
If anything, the camp should just be replaced.
No longer have it for golds etc.
There's a nice support/contact platform already built into facepunch, I think it would be very wise to use it (or something very similar) for ban appeals.
I don't know the extent to the staff's management tools, but with some effort, it could be made relatively simple to administer these requests from the respective control panels.
The support software runs on Zendesk and we'd have to pay for addtional agent licenses so that's a no go
lol, thought it was custom
If Garry doesn't want people getting attention through the refugee camp, at least limit it to mods only, so the people who made an honest mistake can make their arguments.
