I'm always amused by the awful reload procedures on some older firearms.
Just you wait untill the First Mars War begin.
I think that's because they were for self defence, really. This thing held eighteen rounds- the important thing was that it was quick and easy to use. You could reload it later when you were safe.
3d printed guns and similar tech has potential but with the current anti-gun mania i cant see any such projects being very popular.
There's a few, but in the end it always comes to using metal parts for the important bits if you want any sort of reliability or ability to fire powerful rounds.
I mean you got the neostead shotgun that reloads backwards. you slide the under barrel grip forwards to load shells instead of towards you. Or the UTS-15 shotgun, which holds 13 rounds and uses a single barrel with two loading tubes. There's all kinds of wacky shit made, just most of it is proof of concept like shown in the video. I mean shit, you got the G-11 rifle who's internal mechanisms look like a watch maker made the damn thing:

this thing allowed it to fire bursts so fucking fast that you wouldn't feel the recoil till after the last shot left the gun. And for some reason, it used caseless ammunition.
I love the G11, it's the very definition of "kraut spacemagic." When it comes to weird burstfire mechanisms, I'm more partial to the AN-94 though, with its weird dual feed mechanism and bizarre internal pulley system:
