The way images are embedded right now is awful. It's completely arbitrary whether you can move the cursor above/below an embedded image, their quality fluctuates every time you link/embed them, and the text positioning option only seems to work once in a blue moon on them.
Images should display as thumbnails if they're larger than 640x480.
Garry has already said he plans on adding thumbnails for images.
