Quick info first before ideas; Recently I had a bit of win lose scenario. I played the game for some hours before the mini patch after the main update. In which there were some bugs around the boats causing crashes among me and some others, which has since been fixed so that issue is aside. Didn't like the addition of even more over powered scientist NPC's near lootable areas as it puts lower leveled players from looting certain areas (perhaps a gear cap on who scientists/ NPC's will shoot. As to still allow looting near them as someone without any weapons on them?) Anywho since the mini patch as I as saying, this has allowed me and my friends to use the speedboats and with some great comedy value. Who doesn't love being part of a crew of scurvy dogs causing havoc on all coastal areas. Pillaging and looting as we go. The addition of flotsam/ jetsam has also made it easier to refuel at sea, by finding fuel barrels. So the fun can continue for hours on end without having to make land if you so chose. With this in mind my ideas are as follows: More boat classes in future: Tier 1: One person dingy, very slow and easy to sink. (Already in the game) Tier 2: Speedboat, very fast but easy to sink also and holds a loot box. (Already in the game) Tier 3: Improvised Patrol Boat, not as fast as the speedboat but quite faster than dingy. Has heavy crossbow mount on the front, much like a ballista for firing heavy bolts at attackers. Tier 4: This tier would require the player to craft a shipyard module which would need to be placed near the coast and takes up a 3x6 space on foundation blocks. This module would act a dry dock for players to then craft coastal sail ships. It wouldn't be all cannons or anything, but it would open up the possibility of other islands further out than what a speedboat/dingy or patrol boat could get to. The small wooden ships would be sail powered, and go possibly as fast as the patrol boats. They would hold 4x large chests for your loot, and ladders on the side to climb up onto it. Possibly able to also use the shipyard to paint your ship, add painted designs to the sails and flag on your mast. Change armour types plus other cosmetic changes. Sea Based Things & More: Cargo Ships: Large container ships that have been left adrift near the island for players to go on board and loot. These could contain scientists, but also have some high quality loot to make it worth the grind to take the ship. (Possibly have to eliminate all Scientists guarding the ship until.... who knows?) Make-shift Docks: So if we have boats, why do we have to pop out into the ocean... or near enough beach our boats just to get onto land. Need some from of interact-able jetty that the captains can pull up alongside and it automatically will place you on the jetty when you press the space bar to leave your boat. This would also anchor your boat to that jetty and not float off. Small Warship: We have the helicopter that scares anyone on land, but how about a small ship, it doesn't even have to be a warship. Maybe an armoured patrol boat that sails into the map every so often and has scientists on board who will shoot at ONLY people in boats within a certain range, making it so the heli doesn't bother anyone out at sea. Sharks: Sharks only attack people in a certain vicinity to themselves possibly doing 34% damage per bite, making 3 bites until a player dies. This would be another fun factor of getting the loot out at sea. Possibly even making them attack the dingys that stray too far out, and speedboats also. Can be scared off by a gunshot or arrow to one of the eyes. Whales: Very tough to kill, but rewards you with say 300 animal fat and 50 x Whale meat that is maybe even better than bear meat. Fishing: Why not sail out to a nice part of the sea, whack in a fishing rod and catch your dinner the old fashioned way. This could be multi-tiered with fishing nets or crab traps etc etc. I'm not a fisherman so don't know the lingo, but I think this would add another level to getting that ever important food. Treasure Hunting: Now this idea even in my head does sound a little cheesy as I'm not sure about the lore behind the Rust Island. But on the theme of piracy, it may be cool to find a treasure map in some of the flotsam out at sea, which gives you a location of some treasure, be it underwater or on land. And you may be able to go get some of the pirate treasure. Fog/ Fog Horns: More of an immersive feature than a gameplay feature, but many of us out there enjoy creating a fun atmosphere for not just ourselves, but other players. If a heavy fog set in some points during the game, which makes visibility hard at sea - the use of fog horn may be cool to avoid other ships, but also to make a creepy environment for people on land. Who cannot see your ship due to the fog, but can hear the bellows of your horn. Waves: A mechanic that keeps smaller ships pushed near the coast, and only the larger ships can escape them and go out into the open waters. I am already seeing people sailing to the far corners of the map and logging off so they don't get killed. This may counter that for new people, so only people who play long enough can use this exploit with the bigger boats which may even contain beds for your crew to respawn on the boat. Sea Mines: Sea minefields laid by the scientists in certain areas, which when your ship strays to near it explodes doing a fair amount of damage to larger ships. Could possibly be disarmed by someone swimming close and holding the action key for some time, this also may give the player some explosive loot to use in crafting C4 and rockets. Armour Set: For pure sea RP, a captains uniform and uniforms for the crew. With the eoka pistol, pipe shotgun, swords and the uniforms. People could just sail around the rust island causing absolute mayhem. Fixable lighthouse light: This one isn't really important but if you could fix it, and add low grade fuel for it to start the light up again I feel this would be fun for both land and sea going players. Decorative Items: Purely for RP again, but items based around pirate towns etc etc. Pirate flag poles, rum, ability to make rum. Treasure chests which are large secret stashes, telescope to go with the binoculars, pianos with in built sea shanty tunes (and the ability to write your own music by adding your own notes onto a music sheet.) The list could go on with this topic. More Islands: More than 1 island on map. I don't mean the same 8x8 world with smaller islands. I mean like a 20x20 with maybe 3 large islands and a few small ones. The players would only start on 1 island and then have to make boats to get to the others. This would open to lots of new monuments as well. Not being a huge tech wiz I'm not sure how it would effect performance, but if it was done in a way that made anything outside the 8x8 zone not render in until a player moves closer to them in a boat. So I think a powerful enough server could handle that. I do realize a fair few people play this game just to get the best gear and then kill everyone else in PvP, so the thought of more space to escape you/ hide from you may be a negative impact on the game in your eyes. But many people also like to built, make friends, explore. It's not all about the PvP of it. If even one of these ideas makes it in some point, I feel players like me and my friends will have a whale of a time with the sea opening up a whole new level of the game.
This sounds pretty cool. I especially like the different tier boats, though, I would not want this idea interfering with Rust lore.
Boats are Buggy as hell! If you look at your map and use the right muse button to move the map around while driving boat and let go of map button you will be dismounted from boat and it will proceed to run across the map until it runs out of gas. If the Boat is remotely close to a structure, you will NOT be able to upgrade or build on that structure until you move the boat far away from it. The Boats themselves take massive decay, I can repair my boat and go do a 30 min run and my boat will be 50% hp. The boats should automatically shut off when you leave the boat or jump out, jumping out of a boat trying to gather the new little wrecks in the water, I went to get out and pushed the forward button to swim forward and the boat went flying off leaving me stranded. I would like to have the ability to lock a boat up, to my base.
I think offshore fog is the coolest here, or even with out it the LIGHTHOUSES COULD ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING !!!!!!
If a boat is in your TC it doesn't take damage. So create a little boat house on the coast to keep your ship forever. Unless someone raids and takes it. They will also not despawn if in range of your TC.
Interesting.... I actually did this on my own last night. I made a dock and then closed it in near my base, hopefully when I log in the boat is still their.
I've made boat bases in shallow water that I drive the boat into and close a garage door behind it. Doesn't decay when in there.
Yes good idea
Why thank you, Kind Sir!
I would also like to be able to place a code lock on a boat or the ability to fix something to a foundation to attach to the boat or across the boat to stop it being moved,
code locks on boats will never be added because then fellow rust players are not able to steal it in anyway
nice idea but people would just lock up all the boats on day 2. Maybe have a code lock for it but you can hack in which takes 10 minutes...
