”Suuronnettomuus ympäristölle on jo tapahtunut” – Jopa 50 000 li..
No English source as of yet, so will do my best to translate the important info:
Basically a train on a section of track commonly used for transporting dangerous chemicals has leaked 40-50,000 litres of methyl tert-butyl ether, a petrol additive to prevent knocking, used as a solvent when you don't want to use diethyl ether; highly flammable and has a particularly nasty habit of contaminating groundwater, which in this case it almost certainly already has. According to the fire department who reported on it, it's basically guaranteed to be an environmental disaster.
There's still 10 intact carriages, and the concern now is if the stuff catches fire and takes the other 10 with it. The area's been cordoned off and the extent of the spill mapped. Nobody's been injured. VR, the national railway company, has not said whether it was their own train or a Russian one (one or the other, only Russia has a direct rail link to us with compatible trains)
Where did it transport from and where's the destination? Do i need to prepare my special russia-themed tinfoil hat?
Typo in title, should be MTBE, not MBTE.
while I wouldn't put it below them, that still seems kinda far fetched, doesn't it?
What's the environmental impact of this going to be?
No information on that has been released yet.
Groundwater contamination, as far as I can tell.
Yeh, can't edit titles yet.
Virtually minimal. MTBE is non to insignificantly toxic at when diluted in groundwater and biodegrable. It's primary negative effect is that it just makes everything taste like shit.

Picture of the train in question
Those emergency workers are fucking heroes. Imagine having to stand right next to and work with over ten traincars worth of extremely hazardous, toxic, flammable explosives that could explode at literally any moment. Even moving a traincar and having it grind against some rail steel could spark and set it off.
I really hope they can safely move the remaining traincars away and clean up what they can. My heart goes out to all Finlanders that might have health problems because of what's already been spilt.
It's not extremely hazardous, it's not particularly toxic, and it's definitely not an explosive. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.
Yeh my bad, I was just working off what the article said. I'll update the first pose when i'm sober again.
I smoked a marijuana once and my dick fell off. Not even once.
I don't know the actual reasons myself, but diethyl ether is prone to forming peroxides when exposed to air for long periods. It's also more volatile, and about as bad as MTBE when it comes to pollution.
