At one point last year I was pondering whether or not to get the PS4 VR or save up a ton of money for VR on the PC. Looking at the library on the PS4 now I think I made the right choice when it showed up Christmas day. Games like Job Simulator, Arch Angel, EVE Valkyrie, Gran Turismo Sport, SUPER HOT, and Hard Reset work wonders with VR and the immersion is something in these games I haven't felt in years. I highly recommend them if you have a PS4 VR headset.
I didn't think I'd get into VR in the foreseeable future but him mentioning that pretty hefty discount compared to Oculus/Vive, the fact that you can use the ps4 VR on PC, and that it's tax refund month made me jump to get myself one. Oh boy oh boy
I have to say, while I agree with most of his points, the part about "VR video" is something I strongly disagree with. 360 video viewed through a VR headset is simply an abysmal experience all around, it's straight up worse than simply viewing it on YouTube. It feels like being trapped in the center of a sphere of undefined size, with low quality video playing on the inner surface of the sphere. Viewing a 360 video on YouTube at least gives you the illusion of being in a place and being able to look around, while viewing it from inside VR completely shatters any illusion because you can plainly see that a person standing "close" to you is not close, just huge. It must be at least 3D-360 video to be immersive, and to give even an idea of scale at all.
I'm excited to see how museums use alternate reality and virtual reality technologies in the coming decades. Imagine using an AR headset for a guided tour, with pop-up facts and tidbits and video and all that jazz. Or imagine a VR setup where you can explore, using a museum near me for example, a Grand Banks fishing schooner while it's out fishing. And then once you take it off you can go and look at the real thing. I'm excited to see where VR goes.
Knowing that you can get the PS4VR to work on PC actually really tempted me to look into one more as I have a PS4 Pro anyway, and it'd be great for having mates over or playing some exclusive titles whilst also allowing me to use things like Elite if I ever got back into it on PC in VR. The lower screen resolution and all that probably isn't actually an issue, but the controllers are kinda shitty. Hopefully Sony do release new models with better inputs and perhaps even some software updates for multi-camera tracking if you want it. VR support is one thing they have over MS right now in the console market that makes them stand out, it would make sense to improve on it.
Elite is the only game I own that I give a shit about VR capability tbh I started looking through steam VR games and noticed that they have sections for the vive, rift, and "Microsoft Mixed Reality" looking it up they appear to have some REALLY good shit for $350~500 but I've heard nothing about it?
I'm at the point where i can look at VR and see a lot of potential, but there still isn't enough for me to get invested in it.
I had no idea I could use my PSVR on my pc, this opens up a whole world of new possibilities. If the hand controllers can also work with the PC it might be a very viable cheaper alternative to other VR solutions. The only downside I found with the PSVR is that the trackers use different coloured lights and if your hand controllers get close to the visor the tracking gets confused sometimes, otherwise it is pretty great.
I am usually really into innovative and new technologies but thus far VR looks just extremely unappealing. Not sure if I will ever get into it.
