Fighting against technological advance is one of mankind's greatest achievements. And nothing validates a technophobe like a horde of Robots taking your job or blowing up your workplace, then taking your job to rebuild that workplace.
Operation Canteen Crasher is a contest for the MvM gamemode in the same way that Operation Titanium Tank was. But while Titanium Tank was a contest that only allowed missions to be submitted, Canteen Crasher allows maps, missions, weapons and cosmetics to be submitted, much like a TF2 jam event. Instead of a MvM tour like Titanium Tank, Canteen Crasher will feature a MvM campaign, with community-created MvM contracts and side objectives to play with!
Like Titanium Tank, the contest-jam serves to form what will later become the campaign and both players and contest participants can win Canteen Crasher Participant Medals!
For maps: Create a complete, functional, and balanced MvM map with a proper nav mesh and 2 .pop files (for Intermediate and Advanced difficulty). Any map theme is allowed.
For missions: Pick an already-made (aka. old) community MvM map from this table (which we're working on building) and create a balanced MvM mission for it. The contest only accepts intermediate and advanced mode missions. You can submit a maximum of one mission per map-difficulty (max 1 intermediate and advanced for a specific map).
For items: Create weapons and/or cosmetics for the MvM robots to equip and use against the players in the campaign. If you already have an old weapon or cosmetic item sitting around, feel free to create a mod for it and submit that to the contest. We haven't yet decided if we will allow players to use the weapons and cosmetics yet. We will figure that out later.
The contest's deadline is set to July 31st, 2018 @ 11:59 PM ET and the campaign is set to launch on August 15th, 2018. (MvM's birthday)
Full contest information and judging procedure can be found in the official announcement post and the official, 30-page document for the contest. Here's the short, abridged version of that document.
Submit all your contest entries to this forum here. Read the pinned thread for instructions on how to submit your work.
Feel free to use this thread to talk about MvM map/mission making, show off your WIP contest entries (maps, missions, weapons, hats, cosmetics), ask questions, or the like.
Good luck with the contest!
Reserving post
Hi everyone! In case you were wondering, I created the promo art you see at the top. I'm proud to have been a part of this event, and I hope you guys take part.
To clarify:
We can't re-submit any of our old Titanium Tank missions? That's strictly against the rules correct?
You can.
It's clearly written in the pdf
https://hydrogen-mvm.github.io/CanteenCrasher/pdf/Canteen_Crasher_Full_Monster.pdf
"1. You must start from a blank vmf file for this mapping contest! No reusing old work!"
Awesome! Glad to see the community picking up the slack valve has left on MvM!
Although how do the medals work? Who gets what and how?
Check page 20 & 12
https://hydrogen-mvm.github.io/CanteenCrasher/pdf/Canteen_Crasher_Full_Monster.pdf
Submissions award you points, and you must have X points to get X medal.
For people who are confused on how this contest's strange and arcane judging procedure works, see the diagram below.
https://i.imgur.com/lEpT3cd.png
The idea is you start from the top (make something, be it a map, mission, or item) and you want to try to get to the bottom of the diragam without getting stuck around the middle loop (the judging-resubmission cycle).
The judging is not a one-time thing like in other contests. You're strongly encourage to submit something early WIP to the contest to get our feedback, use it to improve and iterate on your entry, and resubmit for judging again! You can keep on revising and resubmitting as much as you need to until you get the 3 necessary pass votes.
I really enjoyed Titanium Tank, I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with for this contest.
Titanium Turmoil 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Thats Preety sweet! Cannot wait to play all the awsome popfiles and so some testing =)
This is a great effort, and I'm excited to model some canteens that I otherwise wouldn't have due to gold star limitations.
Also, things look a bit different since I was here last.
After launching Canteen Crasher, we got a host of questions and the like on our steam group, leading us to quickly put together both a FAQ and Feature Requests document.
Most mapping contests do not allow point_servercommand to be used, but we allow it, and we can add special feature requests into the server should you need extra support from the server to do something you can't do in hammer. Click here for information.
If you have additional questions about Canteen Crasher, please ask in this thread: Canteen Crasher Contest Q&A Thread or just ask in this thread, asking questions in the Steam group comments turns into a mess when there's a lot of people doing so.
After a while, we did some thinking and realized that we really set the bar high on earning those medals. A bit too high, I might add. So we adjusted the numbers a wee bit:
ITEM SUBMISSIONS
- New items will get 100 medal points (up from 50) -- 2 new items = platinum
- Old items will get 40 medal points (up from 10) -- 5 old items = platinum
MISSIONS
- Advanced mode will get 50 medal points (up from 25) -- 4 advanced modes = platinum
- Intermediate mode will get 40 medal points (up from 15) -- 5 intermediate modes = platinum
MAPS
- A passing map still has the same jackpot -- 1 map = platinum
- You also get free steam workshop promotion of your map on this steam group.
- As mentioned earlier, point_servercommand is allowed on maps.
CAMPAIGN
- The medal points table for the campaign will come out with the campaign release. The table in Monster is only a minimum value for each campaign task.
MISCELLANEOUS
- If there's something else you want to submit to Canteen Crasher that we can feature in the campaign server (e.g. custom tank models, bot models, etc.) but we don't have a medal point value attached to it, talk to a judge about your idea(s) and we can negotiate a medal point value. Allow us to confirm first if it's technically feasable to support your entry on our server. (Some ideas require us to write extra Sourcemod logic for them to work, such as custom tank models, and some are impossible to support due to client-side restrictions, such as custom unusual effects and war paints.)
- We have received requests to "fix" the "set damagetype ignite" attribute and will try to hammer a fix in. We are still open to feature requests/"bug fixes" for the campaign. (We'll see if we can hack in a fix so bots can equip the gold pan and that war paints can be applied to bot weapons, for example.)
NOTES
- You can get the full set of Canteen Crasher medals (all 6 medals) if you earn 200 points. Unlike other contests, you don't get just one medal; you get the medal based on your current medal point value + all the lower-tier medals below it.
- All medals drop in real time, not at the end of the event. Once the judges pass your entry, the points are added to the contest medal server and it will drop the proper medals on your backpack. Your reward is instantly issued to you. (We are able to do this because of the strange way the judging works and the lack of "contest winners" for Canteen Crasher.)
- The platinum medal is still only obtainable during the contest half of the event. Once the campaign is launched, it is removed from the drop table. The campaign medal server does not support the platinum medal, so if you want all 6 medals, start working on creating stuff for the contest!
- If you collaborate on your entry, the medal points are not split. If you and a partner submit a map that passes, you both get 250 pts, not 125 pts each. There are no "penalties" for collaborating.
- We will try to write all the campaign logic (thousands of lines of code) and have it tested and configured before the contest deadline so that we can extend the contest deadline into the 2 week contingency period. This is not guaranteed; the deadline is still July 31st. If we pull everything together, we can move it back to Aug 14. We'll announce if we decide to move back the deadline.
Well, some people have been waiting for this: The list of maps currently accepted into the Canteen Crasher campaign. Unlike maps specifically made for this, these are ones nominated by people and then tried out by our judges.
Anyway, the list:
Area 52
Barren
Meltdown
Metro
Powerplant
Yucatan
I will update this post as more maps are accepted.

Only the finest metal hats come with exhaust pipes and sprockets.

Updated two of my workshop submissions to support individual powerup types (the labels are also self illuminated, and the round canteen strap is jiggleboned as well).
^Genius hat!
