https://www.onmsft.com/news/microsoft-releases-source-code-for-windows-3-0-file-manager-and-it-still-works-great-on-windows-10 The release of the Spring Creators Update may be coming up soon, but if you’re up for some Windows nostalgia while waiting, you can now download the Windows 3.0 File Manager on your Windows 10 PC. Long-time Microsoft employee Craig Wittenberg has recently published the source code on GitHub, which was originally copied from Windows NT back in 2007. As you can see below, the Windows 3.0 File Manager is fully functional on Windows 10 and is a real throwback to the early 1990’s when copying, moving, deleting, and searching for files became easier in Windows thanks to this core app. It all works via the MDI interface, which allowed users to see more than one folder in one window. https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/electricsmartbeardedcollie
Boy, I sure do hope this doesn't open up any exploits to "legacy systems" from 1990 that are still running 3.0 because "upgrading would break someone's workflow" Jokes aside, it's pretty neat that this actually works in Win10. Bet some folks who were around at that time would appreciate it at least for a few minutes of nostalgia.
taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe winfile.exe
Now release Program Manager, too.
If there's one thing to praise Windows for, it's the backwards compatibility going back 25+ years. I mean, you can you even upgrade through every version of Windows and decades old programs will continue to work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH1BKPSGcxQ
I sure do love 255 character filepath limits only lifted extremely recently and you still need to toggle a setting to enable it.
That is amazing, surprised how it switched from DOS based ME to NT based XP and everything still worked.
Up until 2014 my PC had actually been the exact same install I was using from my first PC back in 1998, it had gone through the upgrade process all the way up to Win 7 without a format over the years.
If they released the whole source for WFW 3.11 that'd be incredible. Just the whole 16-32 bit real mode driver thunky thing is quite the hack.
This is not a real issue, security through obscurity isn't security.
Should be noted that minor edits were made in other to make this compatible with Win 10. Also, that video is a little misleading since it only shows a very narrow selection of relatively simple programs
