This is a search for evidence of one of the popular theories of how dark matter manifests. ADMX is basically a super good AM radio, and they're slowly going to slide through the frequencies to search for signals that might match the theoretical axion. It's what you wish your car radio was.

>> This week, the Axion Dark Matter Experiment unveiled a new result, published in Physical Review Letters, that places it in a category of one: It is the world’s first and only experiment to have achieved the necessary sensitivity to “hear” the telltale signs of these theoretical particles. This technological breakthrough is the result of more than 30 years of research and development, with the latest piece of the puzzle coming in the form of a quantum-enabled device that allows ADMX to listen for axions more closely than any experiment ever built.

Oh man this is unbelievably massive news for physics and our understanding of our universe if they really have found the 'magic frequency' that resonates with dark matter. At least as far as my knowledge goes, we really haven't had any concrete proof of dark matter's existence other than enormous gravitational lensing that we couldn't explain otherwise. But this is an entirely different method of detection that very well might give us an entire new set of eyes to gaze upon our universe. This is awesome stuff.
Also, I just want to point out just how magnificantly sci-fi this actual, real sentence is:
"It was only recently, however, that the ADMX team has been able to deploy superconducting quantum amplifiers to their full potential, enabling the experiment to reach unprecedented sensitivity."
Fuck yeah, science.
